I am the Workshop Administrator at an HGV service/repair garage in Trafford Park. At the moment, I am the only female-which can be lonely but I have the guys. Apparently I'm not a girl-I'm looked at as one of the lads-before you feminists start on your complaints-I'm taking this as a compliment.

My diabetes makes me special (I got told that when I was first diagnosed and I still believe it today), if you can't deal with it then go away and find your own way of handling it.

Last time I looked it was the UK (Birmingham England) although been watching the Parliament channel recently and I am beginning to wonder if there will be a 'United' Kingdom after Brexit........ The Scots want to stay in the EU and are pushing for another Independence vote, the Welsh 'hate' the English and have their own Language, Northern Ireland is a Country with many historical political issues that have only recently known peace through the Good Friday agreement to which is now threatened with a hard border - and if the Parliamentarians do not fufil their obligations of the will of the people then we might well have the 5th of November on another date as there will be 17.4 million Guy Fawkes to put in prison and deal with as the People will end up burning down the houses of Parliament if we do not leave the EU!

(I once went into a computer showroom and the salesman tried to sell me a PC with the latest Windows 8 - he asked me if I could get off the wallpaper display screen - after about 8 minutes trying to figure it out, he took great delight in showing me it was 'hiding' at the side of the screen! hence to say he never got the sale. Windows was such a rip off and a bore.

Pool (American) not billiards, football (soccer) - have to cater for a global audience here.

Hi guys! I am Fridgeraider (for obvious reasons!). I am a 58 year old overweight female and have recently been diagnosed with type 2. Am having a panic as I have a GP appointment tomorrow and am clueless in knowing what to ask! I am pretty much housebound due to arthritis (need a new hip) and really do need a lock on the fridge door! I know my HbAc1 is 52 but that doesn't mean much to me yet. Am expecting to be started on Metformin (nursey said) but am not really keen as have heard of some undesirable side efects. Would e prepared to work hard at losing some of this blubber! Would be really grateful for some pointers as to how bad 52 actually is! Am feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed to be honest!
 
hi @Fridgeraider ..i started at 57, so yous ain't so bad.

Lost and overwhelmed is how many felt.. i know i did, so your not alone in that.

for doctors.
metformin IS a popular choice.
it can cause some upset tummies..(i'm on it and been fine, )
there is a slow release version, you might ask to try if it disturbs you too much.

I chose to try and lose weight and alter diet, without meds.....and those first 6 weeks were hell,
( i went on to take metformin daily.) but i was eating as the docs suggested.....bad mistake.

and then i found this forum, and life turned a corner for me., so you are doing better already then i did.

You could ask to hold off on the meds and see how you get on just with a better diet.?

as recently diagnosed you should also ask for you eyesight to be checked..Your sugar levels can blur your vision, but this test is not the specsavers one, it's to check for any damage to the eye. we all get it, so it's normal.
also ask for your feet to be checked over.

You could also ask when your next HAB1c* will be., so you know how far away it is..
(most seem to be 3 months apart, at start )
(*HAB1c is the measure of your blood over 3 months..doctors use that to score how well you are managing your blood sugar levels...mine was 57..yours was 52..lower is better )

Also maybe ask to attend a course if your able.
i know a few will poo-poo the courses and they have a good point, but it was good for me to mingle with others going through that same diagnosis, together.

You'll probably find out more from here, (i googled the hell out of 'diabetes type 2' so i was more clued up on the course, then others...but i've still leant shed loads just by being on here.)

Sure others will post up.

@daisy1 has an excellent guide that really helps.

And the nice thing is...now you've found the forum, your no longer alone in the battle.

Hi everyone. I have just joined. My name is Maureen and I will be 75 in May. I have Type 2 Diabetes . I manage it with Metformin hydrochloride (Glucient SR) I take 500mg in the morning and 1000 with my evening meal. I hate exercise but I really try to walk as much as poss every day. I struggle with working the carbs out but try to maintain a low carb diet. Would love to talk to or just read others opinions on this or give me any hints. Would someone be kind enough just to say hello so that I know I have successfully got on board. Maureen

@Fridgeraider welcome! How did your GP visit go? I don’t visit this thread often, so will look for you elsewhere.
I do want to recommend a forum very very like this one for folks who are contemplating/waiting for/have accomplished joint replacement surgery. I am a 2 time hippie there, and I so sympathise with your pain. I would like to shamelessly plug that forum (no I don’t get paid for this; in fact I donate to them lol). It’s called Bonesmart.org . Packed with info, extremely supportive just like here, and a party on New Year’s Eve! You may hear something like this,”what? Your surgeon says you have to lose x weight before he’ll take you? That’s rubbish, and we’ll help you locate some second opinions in your area. He told you to EXERCISE??!! They just do not understand how badly it hurts just to be alive some days.”
