Hi my name is Karen and I'm desperately trying to find ways of 'getting though' to my little sister...

Although I do not have diabetes myself, both my dad (diagnosed as a kid, approx. 6-8 yrs old) and my younger sister (diagnosed approx 2 yrs old) have type 1 diabetes and so as a result I have been aware of 'it' and the impact it can have, my entire life.

My little sister is now 18 years old and away for her first year at uni and she is already on her second hospital stay due to mis-management of her insulin. Both stints in hospital were unavoidable. This is the thing that I'm struggling with, as are both my mum and dad (and it's not even down to drunken student stupidity because she hardly drinks anything).

So what I want to know is this... she's obviously not listening to us anymore because we're simply heard to be nagging, however she's also not listening to the doctors either. Does anyone know or have any suggestions of how we can get her to realise the damage she's causing? Dad has tried explaining the long term issues of what she's doing (as he now suffers from many of them, due to not wanting to admit he was different to his mates when he was in his teens and twenties) but she is, like most of us at that age, unable to see that it could happen to her.

Any suggestions you may have would greatly received.

Thanks
Karen

Unfortunately that is the problem Karen. She is at that age where she thinks she is invincible. As was I at that age.

I'm now 38 and suffer from many of the complications of diabetes. Some complications are a complete pain and if I could turn back time and prevent them I would. But I can't and I now have to put up with them. All you can really do is be there for her and support her without nagging her. Very very difficult I know but you will find that the more you nag the more she will dig her heels in. She will have to find out for herself.

I know that this may not be much help but maybe if she was to come on here and at least see that there are people that have done what she is doing it may change her mind.

Hi there,
My name is Vicki, I am a forty two year old woman.
I was diagnosed seven years ago as type 2, spent the next year battling to get insulin and ended up in a diabetic coma before finally being diagnosed as type 1, insulin dependent and getting my meds sorted.
I live in the South East, but initially from the North East.
I work for a national restaurant chain advising on safety, this is a mobile role & I've found my diabetes has never caused a problem with this.
I'm looking forward to joining in.

Hiya everyone i'm Chris and i came across this page by chance and thought it was brilliant and a good place to see if there were type 1 diabetics out there with the same problems as me .I am 40 and had type 1 since i was 4yrs old ,I am an electrician with a very busy and active life style .I have been married to my wife Miranda for 19 yrs and we have a son of 20 and a daughter of 13 and luckily all 3 are free of diabetes ,we also have 2dogs and a bearded dragon .My spare time is spent caravaning -air rifle target shooting and dog walking ,best of all spending quality time with my family. My diabetes is in fairly good control with a hba1c of 10.3 and im tablets for high blood pressure and cholesterol but niether is excessivley high .I have had laser treatment on both my eyes which isn't fun but was necessary .I am looking forward to reading and looking through the site for news and information and maybe where possible i might be able to help out and answer any questions.Cheers for now.

To lisatb ,Ive read your post and Ive been there myself ,now im not saying this will help you but it did me so here goes, First of all TALK TO YOUR HUSBAND !!!! Tell him exactly whats going on and how you are ,Secondly decide between you when you are going to change and start again from scratch,Third the day you both decide is the day you both begin the rest of your lives because on your own you can do it but with some-one by your side you can take on the world and win.On the day get up and do a blood test take insulin if you need to and eat breakfast with your husband set out a plan of action and stick to it .Tell him how your feeling also on this day test your blood every 2-3 hrs i know this sounds a pain but you'll get a better idea on what your body and bloods are doing and also eat small amounts often .If your bloods are high bring it down slowly and if there low bring them up slowly .After a few days you'll feel differently about things and with regular monitoring you'll be amazed how quickly your body and blood levels settle down .I hope this has helped but my best advise is always TALK ! To your partner .
