Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

 
My name is Suna, I'm a 58 year old woman. My heriatige is Turkish Cypriot/Irish, but I was born in London, where I now live again. I have been type 1 diabetic since I was 4, but having grown up in different countries I missed out on the usual monitoring and advice from professionals I might have had. I also have rheumatoid arthritis.

I'm a slave to four cats: Ruby, 12, who's lived with me since a small kitten; Jack (the Lad), 18/19? who lived in this area and decided to move in 12 years ago; Gabriel and Castiel (Gabe and Cas) who are 9 month old brothers, they've been with me since they were 5 weeks old and were rescued as strays.
I used to be a riding instructor and wanted to be a 3 day event rider, but unfortunately rheumatoid arthritis ended my horse-based career in my 20s. I have done many jobs, including sign painting, artist, shop assistant and carer. I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none.
I lived in different countries as a child, including Borneo, Sarawak, Cyprus, the UAE.
I have degrees in Communication Studies and Film History, and in Social Work, as well as various other qualifications. I have been unable to work due to complications of RA for 12 years now, although I volunteer with an art group for people with mental health issues.
I enjoy documentaries and character driven series. I love the CW's Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Dr Who, Expedition Unknown, Digging for Britain amoung others. My favorite book has to be Lord of The Rings, which has inspired my art and writing since I was a child.
I love meeting people and learning new things.

I am a type 2 diabetic diagnosed just Today, May 2024. My wife has been diabetic for many years and she guided me here, I’m curious to see how people cope and control their diet.

Just joined to get advice on managing a recent diagnosis of prediabetes.
Not into sharing lots of personal information on websites, so just the essentials.

Male, age 88, starting to slow down after a fairly active life.
Lifelong keen cyclist from age 11, cycled to work for 45 years, raced and toured.
Lifelong total miles just over 387,000 (stats nerd). Now using electric bike.
Like many other former endurance athletes I've developed heart problems. A recent pacemaker has got me back to short 20 mile rides.
I've always had a sweet tooth so shouldn't be too surprised at the prediabetes.
Trying to get my head round a totally new diet. Looked at several websites but they suggest all sorts of less common ingredients and charge an arm and a leg.
 
My name is Karamat Iqbal. Male. I have been in the UK since 1970, age12. I was born in Azad Kashmir from where around two third of Pakistani population come.

I first heard about diabetes in 1983 while doing a first aid course. So I became quite conscious of my food needs.

Ten years ago, after a serious hospital episode I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Recently I was threatened with insulin which I managed to keep at bay for now through a low carbohydrate diet. I hope to avoid insulin for a long time if not forever.

I have a dog, Lottie, which helps me to get out every day.

Upon coming to England I fell in love with books and music. Of the former I read quite a bit and have written a few books.
As for music I started with Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, Supertramp Crime of the Century and others. The biggest music in my life has been Bruce Springsteen, starting with Born to Run in the mid 1970s. We have seen him and the E Street Band about a dozen times.

My name is Pam Bramall. I am 77 years old, a mother of two soms, and a grandmother of 2 grandsons. I am English by birth, but live in the beautiful Shetland Islands. My elder son has a pet, a cocker spaniel named Finn. However, my friend in Shetland has a Labradoodle called Dougal and I count him as my dog. I have had many pet dogs over the years but in our old age my husband and I would have difficulty looking after one now. I have worked with computers since 1967 and am happy with either Microsoft or Apple. However the modern technology is beyond my understanding. I have a Microsoft laptop but am writing this information on my i-pad. I get on very well with people and never dislike anyone on first meeting. Afterwards, it is up to them. I look forward to find out more about my diabetes with this Forum.

Hello - that's a lot of questions!

Recently diagnosed T2 after having gestational diabetes 19 years ago - guess I managed to dodge the bullet for a good while!

So, I'm 58 today as it happens!

I work super long hours in my own business, I live on a narrowboat and when kiddo heads to uni I'll be an empty nester with a dog & a cat for company.

I used to travel a LOT - roadtrips by camper and motorbike. Looking forward to doing more of that once my business is better established.

Currently very anti meds for this condition so am going to try my best to control with diet - got a lot to learn and also to manage my own disappointment and frustration with having developed it.

Got a free trial with Freestyle Libre and very interested in Dr David Unwin's approach.

So, let's see where this goes :-D

Hi my name is Linda, I recently found out I have type 2 Diabetes and want to improve my eating habits and saw your Mediterranean diet plan and wanted to try it. Since finding out almost two months ago I’ve lost ten pounds but I know there’s more ways to dress up the food I’m eating and stay healthy. I was a coach for 10 to 12 year olds soccer, basketball and baseball for 8 years and got hurt on a river adventure and had back surgery and kind of went down hill after that. They fixed my back and leg so I could walk properly again. I’m kind of used to southern cooking and cutting out rice , potatoes and pasta hasn’t been easy. There has to be a way to dress up the chicken and fish like a real chef. Please help
