Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hi there
My name is Lorraine and I’m from Staffordshire, UK. I’m 68 yrs old and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last September. I’d been pre diabetic for several years and to be quite honest I didn’t pay very much attention to it ! I just thought, well I haven’t got diabetes so I’m ok !! Talk about not addressing something so life changing, I didn’t realise how serious a condition it is.
Anyway, I finally got my head around my diagnosis and changed my diet completely and embraced a low carb diet. It took a while and at first I hated everything food related…..but I realised it was something I had to get a grip on. So after a good talking to myself I jumped in !!
I also have arthritis and had a knee replacement a few days before lockdown in 2020 ( l was very blessed to get a cancellation, goodness knows when I would have had my operation).
I love to read and I like to bake, although diabetic friendly desserts are not a nice as “normal” ones.
I control my diabetes by diet alone so hopefully that will continue…..

Hi, my name is Logan. I'm 33 years old and male. I was born in West Yorkshire, England. Now living in North Derbyshire.
Personally I am not religious but try to be respectful to others who are.
My personality is complex, gentle and mysterious even to me.
No pets.
Definitely prefer Apple but stuck with Microsoft for PC gaming haha
Used to like football but lost all respect for the game following FIFA scandals so don't really follow much anymore. (Bradford City supporter)
Can be easily angered but it depends on circumstances.

I am 76 years young, quite frayed around the edges, and the middle and must admit the top isn't too good either. I have 2 grown up sons and 2 grownup step sons. Sadly my sons take after me in many ways especially diabetes ,eldest son has type 2 diabetes and younger son diabetes type 1 like me. The step sons are like my husband and have his arthritis no sign of diabetes thankfully for them. Younger son has returned home to live with us together with is dog.
We are fortunate to live in Lytham St. Annes and have supportive doctors, good local bakery, very good butchers and Have 2 branches of Booths supermarket.
We have son's lurcher dog and 3 elderly cats left over from when we ran a small local cat sanctuary from our home animals being housed in pens in our rear garden. This kept me busy 7 days a week until I gradually became increasingly infirm.

From selling cars for a living I now "drive" a mobility scooter . I used to only use it in the evening as I was embarrassed to be seen..
I nowadays enjoy using the thing as it gives me freedom to do some shopping get about a little and meet many people 99% smile and me cross the road etc

I will post a photo when I manage to work out how to do so.
I have been a member of Diabetes UK since I was diagnosed 55years ago it didn't phase me as my father was type 1 and he was always very active busy with many interests right up until he died (heart attack after small operation).

I'm retired now but used to be a Nursery Nurse/Teaching Assistant in a Catholic school for 20years working with all age groups but specialising in special needs.

I’m the the only one on either side of my family with diabetes
To my knowledge I’ve only known 3 people with type 2 and 2 them are dead 1 of them had several surgeries amputating both of his legs before he died shortly after
I read all the nutrition labels when I’m grocery shopping found out some stuff is labeled 0 sugar 0 added sugar but tastes sweet and sugar is listed in ingredients so now I have to read all the ingredients too and it is exhausting

Many of these questions could be used for social engineering, and I don't think it's appropriate for people to respond to them. Each to their own.

Most of us don't read all the ingredients but simply have a quick scan over the nutritional information to see how many carbs a product has.
All carbs except fibre and polyols are converted to glucose in the body so it's more useful to look at that than to the 'of which sugar' part, and it saves you from reading all the ingredients.
If you're in the US, you can subtract the fiber from the total carbs to work out net carbs, different systems on both side of the pond.

I know I never did (I was put off by the question 'Are you male or female') and as far as I know they still like me here.

HI Everyone. I'm a fifty year old Canandian man who was pre-diabetic for a couple if years, made significant diet lifestyle changes and then was misdiagnosed as type 2 by my Endocrinologist. Following antibody tests due to not fitting the type 2 profile, it was clarified that I'm type 1 (LADA 1.5). I moved to a different clinic and am getting good support now.
I currently take 4 injections of insulin a day, but my dosage is low due to following a low carb diet and walking after each meal.
I use a Dexcom G7 CGM and use insulin pens for MDI.
I'm interested in exploring a high fat low carb diet (not quite Keto) to minimize both insulin usage and reduce swings in blood sugar.
It's been 5 months now and I can typically hold time in tight range to between 70-80% of the time, but I'm keen to get more proficient.
I look forward to learning from the group!

Hi, my name is Del. I'm new here. I was diagnosed around 3 years ago, thought I'd put myself into remission by losing weight/diet and was happily living in denial until we changed GP surgery's last month.
Following a routine (welcome to the practice) blood test, I discovered that my BS levels were through the roof and I was no longer living in Egypt.
Long story short, I'm now on the welcome to hell Metformin journey and prick testing 3x a week.
