I don’t know too much about this forum as I’ve only just joined on the advice of my doctor. I’m on the cusp apparently of being diabetic so I have to watch what I eat so I don’t go over my levels. It is also reassuring that I’m able to talk on this app and get advice.

Hi, my name is Winifred ( Widdie is a childhood nickname ) I was diagnosed type 2 about 20 years ago ( I'm nearly 82 ) Recently my blood sugar became too high and now on Insulin twice a day. BS was 18, now 7.5 but seem stuck. Dr will want me at 5.5 but really struggling with need for sweet things and sorting out carbs. I have mild IBS which adds to probs and GP says no fruit ! I think this forum is excellent but still finding my way round with questions to ask !

Thanks for the ad.
My name is Colin, I'm 64.
I live in rural North Northumberland.
I am a type 2 diabetic and take Metformin. I guess my career a sales manager, high pressure and high stress didn't help my health and now I'm paying the price. I had a heart attack on my 60th birthday and subsequently had 3 stents fitted. I have always enjoyed a drink and at times I drank heavily. I now drink much less and try to keep to a good healthy diet. I still work as a part time greenkeeper at our local golf course and this keeps me quite fit. I keep my weight steady too.

Hello

Hello, My name is David Allen and I have just joined this diabetes forum and I would like to introduce myself

I am 64 years old, English, I was born in Leicester and moved to London when I was 22 years old. I then moved with my partner to live in Nice France when I was around 45.

I have worked in IT since leaving college, going through the levels of Programmer to Team Leader before eventually becoming a Web Designer and I am now retired

Various health problems have been with me growing up, probably the one causing the most problems is alcoholism

After a good 20 years where my career took off, I traveled around the world twice, and had my own house in Wimbledon the drinking went from having a good time no problem, to causing me lots of problems, blackouts, losing jobs, arguing with my partner and eventually rehab

Anyway, to bring things more up to date, my partner died 4 years ago leaving me on my own in France where for some reason I still haven’t managed to speak French. Then two and a half years ago I slipped cleaning the kitchen floor, my leg was broken with the bone sticking out. At the hospital they started to treat it but after a week I caught Covid and they had to stop. By the time they could restart, it was too late and the leg was infected all they could do was to amputate it. I then spent 9 months recovering in Rehab and got a prosthetic leg

Until about 6 weeks ago things were going fine except for several occasions where for no reason I fainted. My doctor said not to worry but not to stand up to fast

Then 6 weeks ago I started to get dizzy, I felt weak and I couldn’t eat. I just lay on the bed. Things just got worse each day. My throat became very sore and when I tried to eat something I was sick.

After nearly 3 weeks of this I had had enough and thinking that I was going to die I called an ambulance

At the hospital they did tests and said I was acutely diabetic and my blood sugar level was through the roof. Add to this several ulcers and mushrooms in the wind pipe I’m not sure wether due to the diabetes or because I didn’t eat for weeks.

I have now been at a hospital in Cannes for 3 weeks, not sure how long to go. They have been teaching me how to monitor and manage the diabetes. I have a disc on my arm and a little monitor which tells me my glucose level. Then depending on the number I inject insulin 3 times a day. In addition I’m finding out what I can and can’t eat.

I like cooking and eating especially French pastries but I guess I’ll have to change that

I hope this has given you a background of me and why I joined the forum

Hi,
Thanks for letting me join; I have had type 1 diabetes since the age of 21 which I was diagnosed with in year 2 of my state registered nursing course. I completed my trading and have been a general and mental health nurse/manager for 37 years before retiring 10 years ago. I have been on the Libre 2 system for some years and recently I have commenced the omnipod system which I have found to be much easier in as much as I only need to change the pod every 3 days and don’t need injections at all other than with a new pod. I am about to commence the omnipod 5 system which I hope will be just as good as it ensures my background insulin remains consistent to my needs. I am quite active and enjoy walking everyday keeping my step count to a minimum of 12000 a day and up to 2200. My wife and I love going away in our caravan and have been doing this for many years but since retiring we have interspersed cruising into the mix which we love but it can be a little difficult at times with my diabetes. Trying to work out carb rates and keeping the exercising going and also ensuring I have sufficient equipment for the length of time on the cruise. There is usually an option for an in cabin sharps box which I take up.
All in all, life isn’t too bad so long as you don’t let it take over your life but just live life to the full within the confines of your limitations.
Looking forward to seeing what people are discussing and perhaps will ask a few questions myself about certain issues which crop up as and when they do.
Cheers for now.
