Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hi folks, my name's Peter and i'm a newly-diagnosed pre-diabetic, with a score of 42mmol/mol. I'm retired and live in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. I'm an ex-software developer but am now an avid dog walker with my rescue Wire-haired (brained) Fox Terrier. We used to explore the local countryside looking for places to buy cake and coffee, but I guess it'll be just the coffee now

According to medical records my A1c was not bad earlier this year, but in June a family member was taken very ill and I've taken on the new role of carer, necessitating countless trips to A&E and countless hours waiting for doctors and test results. I've read that stress and poor diet can be a major contributor to increase in A1c levels and this year I've had both in spades.

I'm now in the processing of revising my diet and getting ready for life without tasty, accessible, cheap, nutrition-free dangerous snacks: I'd rather that than go T2. I've ordered a Libre2 CGM and will be fascinated to see how my body reacts to all the stuff I've been eating!

I'm rather worried about bread at this stage as it's not only something I like to eat, but also to bake: I invested in a wheat grain mill and have 20Kg of stored wheat berries to get through!!

Anyway, really looking forward to meeting people here and exchanging some good info!

Oh he's definitely that! We've had him a couple of years now and we're still discovering new, er, traits He's really up for walkies though, so he's helped tremendously with my exercise regime.
 
He reminds me of my mum's dog Rover (sadly I never met him), who escaped from my grandma's garden and nipped the ankle of the policeman who lived next door, woops! He was once kicked by a man, so didn't like men.

Just a quick introduction. I was given the bad news about being Type 22nd October this year but I’ve been pre diabetic for about 5 years. I’ve always struggled with my weight and mental health since I was about 17 (54 now) and used food and alcohol as crutches. If I’m being brutally honest I wasn’t bothered when I was pre diabetic as I though so what and if I keel over who cares. To my surprise though the diagnosis has had the opposite effect on me I thought it would. I’ve totally embraced my changes in diet and have really enjoyed cooking recipes from the cookbooks I’ve bought and other resources available. I’ve dropped 120 to 118 kilos in a week without as much effort as I thought I’d need and I feel better mentally and physically.
So hello and onwards and upwards to my next blood test
 
I hope you find the new Libre helpful - I found them enlightening.

I used to make quite a lot of cakes before diagnosis. Spiced pumpkin loaf cake and carrot cake were my favourites. That sourdough looks lovely!

Maybe you could check out some keto/low carb bread recipes on YouTube.
 
It arrived today, so my arm is now part-shaved ready for the Grand Installation!

Yes, I'll be certainly checking those out, but I'm also preparing myself to tackle Ezekiel Bread - should be fun! I shall report back ...

I’m 74 years old and was diagnosed with Type2 when I was about 50. It’s genetic on both sides of my family! I’m only on Metformin and Glicazide and now I pay for a Freestyle 2 plus CGM which helps me monitor and control my levels more closely and it also gives my my continuous A1c.
