.
My name is Gretha, female, and I am 79 years old and was diagnosed with type 2- about 7 years ago. At that time I was only on a diet. Since moving to England from Canada I was placed on Metformin. Over a long period, about a year I slowly became more and more ill. My husband died and I blamed that grief. Then I thought it was c.diff. but wasn't sure. My bowels were out of control, very liquid, very smelly. I hardly dared go anywhere. I was finally so ill I was bed ridden.
As I live in a retirement complex, an administrator came to see me asking if a doctor was coming. I said I had a telephone appointment. A resident came to see me and I answered the same. He said, Not good enough and left and within the hour a nurse practitioner was at my side. she said have you considered you might be having a reaction to Metformin? I said my doctor and my diabetes nurse know of my condition - they haven't mentioned this. She said STOP taking Metformin for a few days and see what happens. I DID AND WITHIN THREE DAYS my bowels were back to normal, and I began to feel quite perky, my appetite returned. I challenged my doctor on this and she said stay off Metformin for 2 weeks and then we will try Gliclazide. I am now fine and feel good and it works. Now all you poor upset and smelly folks might take this up with your doctor. I was so ill and now I am fine. There is hope !
