Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hello
I have a son who is 29 in October. He has Down's Syndrome, Type 1 Diabetes (dx aged 10) and Coeliacs disease (age 11). He has very recently moved into a Supported Living service 15 or so miles away. We have been working on this for years as hubby is now 70 and I am 63 (and have Parkinson’s disease). We thought we would have horrendous problems with M accepting the transition but that bit has gone amazingly well. However I am horrified to be told by the Care team that they cannot share M's blood glucose readings without his permission!!! It has always been acknowledged that whilst staff are on a steep learning curve we would have to work closely together until they are up to speed and have some experience under their belt. They refused to share bloods and decided that M did not have capacity to consent to this sharing of personal information and so we now need a Best Interest meeting to see if it is in M’s Best Interest to share his bloods with us. HELLO. I sent them an email saying we consider that they are endangering M's health and we hold them fully responsible if anything happens and low and behold they have suddenly agreed to send us his bloods 3 times a week. But they added that if we give them advice to change anything about his regime they cannot act on it because we are not medical professionals!!
Has any parent had experience of managing type 1 in a Supported Living service when the young person has learning difficulties and cannot manage the diabetes on his own?
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi @Diddlydill , welcome to the forum.

I think this post would be much better placed as a thread of it's own rather than in this introduction thread.
That way, more people will see it, and hopefully members with knowledge on your issues will reply. (I'm not from the UK so I can't chip in on this, except to wonder who his legal guardian is. But rules around this may be very different from country to country, and I'm not even sure if my question is relevant anyway.)

I'd be happy to move your post for you, but even better would be to start a new thread yourself, because it would be at the top of the New Posts list and not halfway down because it was posted hours ago.

To start a new thread, go to 'Forums' (top left), choose the forum you want to post in (Ask a Question is always a good bet) and hit the 'Post Thread button at the top right.
Don't forget to use a title reflecting the subject, this can make a big difference.

If you prefer me or another mod to move your post, just let us know, and if you prefer your post to stay in this thread, that's perfectly fine as well.

Hi,

I would ask for a review and, at that stage, ask that his levels nbe shared and make the case you have made here. His social worker should also be aware of the importanvce of this and should support you. If this fails, getr an advocatre involbed.

Can he agree? Does he have capacity> Who assesed his caoacity and are you aware oif it and also, why is there no Best Interest Decision made that sits on his file and outlines clearly why this is not being allowed,

Bit of work for you to do but I would most certainly continue to follow it up. In my opinion,m you are acting in his best interests and are also experienced at his management. Keep at it!

Hello I am Jo. I am 69 and have had type 2 for over 20 years. I started out diet controlled then 10 years later I was put on medication. Now I am back to diet control using low carb plan and off all meds and determined to keep it that way. I currently use a Libre Freestyle sensor which has its uses but have trouble keeping on so use a waterproof patch + plasters on top which looks unsightly but luckily cold weather here now so long sleeves! I am lucky to have great support now which makes it much easier. I can't remember any of the suggested things to say but am open to questions. I have a Shih Tzu called Fred who is 8 on first October and brings me so much joy.20220814_002155.jpg

Hi my name is Chris and I am a 64 female form Argentina, I live in Buenos Aires, I do not believe in any particular religion but I have an spiritual view of life. I would describe myself as somebody with a stong character, good intentions and good heart.
I have two rescued dogs, one is 15 years old and the other 4 years old. Microsoft. I do not play any sports nowadays, but I usedd to play paddle in my youth.
I am getting better at not getting angry easily as before. I have no tatoos and I have 2 ear rings (when I was born they gave it to me).
Favourite musicians : Charly Garcia, Beatles, also like clasics as Bach and Mozart. I have no preference about genre music, I hear a variety of genres depending on my mood.
I love going camping when I can.
I have been 3 times in love
Never used fake tan
I have visited many countries in Europe and America
Favorite city Barcelona
British series
Films: Brasil, Billy Elliot, Cinema Paradiso
I am wealthy for now, in a country that is mostly unstable in terms of economy
I work in a Public Hospital for 40 years now, I am a pediatritian
I have studied medicine, pediatrics, pediatric nephrology, ayurveda, mindfulness and compassion
I like my sense of humor most about myself
The least i like about myself is my procrastination

Hi Chris from Argentina, good to get to know about you. I too recently joined here in this forum. hope we will create some memories to cherish
wish you good health

Hi ,thanks for allowing me to join, my name is steve,I’m a 63 year old widow, been retired now for7 years,
I do a lot of walking ,I have a pet border collie that ensures I walk about 15,000 steps a day .
im not a religious person, and a few years ago I bought a van and converted to a camper,
and I love babysitting for my sons 3 children.
I was recently diagnosed as pre diabetic and hypertension, and put on tablets my blood pressure now seems to be under control, and through trial and error adjusting my diet to keep my blood sugar low,
this all happened in the last 3 weeks ,so I’m still in the process, and awaiting more tests,
I used to read a lot, loved Stephen king, and dean koontz,Grisham ,and anything really that grabs me in the first chapter,
my favourite films are the likes of ,the green mile, pride and prejudice, and hobsons choice, not to forget Spartacus,
i try to be a positive person ,managing it the majority of time,

I’m 63 but only 30 in my mind.married with 2 girls and two fantastic grandkids (most of the time!) i enjoy lots of hobbies mostly within the home as I like to keep my myself busy unfortunately one of them is baking especially during lockdown and that’s lead me to gain so much weight like a lot of people. The biggest problem being I’m a wheelchair user 90% of the time with very limited mobility using a walker. I’ve become 100% dependant on my wheelchair as I’m unable to use the walker because of the weight gain. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only 2 weeks ago and it wasn’t a complete shock as I’ve been on the borderline for some time. I I’m a very positive person as I’ve had numerous medical issues resulting in more operations than I can name I actually think my mental attitude has always helped me recover quickly. I’m a fiercely independent woman and can find some things very frustrating and hate asking for help but I’ve learnt that it’s not a sign of weakness to ask. I was born in Glasgow but moved to England when I was 10. I remember being so distraught even at a young age leaving the place I loved so much and it took me a long time to accept it. I planned to move back there when I reached 16 but it never happened as I met someone who changed my life and we’ve now been married for 45yrs! I was always so active brave daring or stupid as some people would say and led a very busy life not stopping for a minute. It wasn’t until 10yrs ago that all changed and gradually my physical abilities became an issue. I still keep busy but have learnt there is no shame to take time out when I need to. I’m surrounded by my beautiful family and wonderful friends who treat me no different than they did prior to my health. I consider myself a very lucky person

Hi Kelly198,

Welcome to the forums :)

I'm also a part time wheelchair user, mostly when out and about and also have limited mobility, lots of other medical conditions (sadly) and type 2 diabetes. You are so right, there really isn't any shame in asking for help when we need it and I have found these forums a fantastic help in getting my T2 more under control so hopefully you will also.

Looking forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you :)
