Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hello, I'm Mark, 57. I was diagnosed with Type 2, 3 weeks ago.
I live in Suffolk, UK. I'm married to my childhood sweetheart, and we have 4 grown up children, a pack of 12 racing Huskies, a piano and too many guitars.
I work in the arts as a graphic designer, 3D designer and art director and to complete the creative set, also score music for film and documentary.
I'm mad about music (all music, but especially modern classical), mountains and travel and am currently learning Norwegian.
I also suffer from Psoriasis which has now been successfully treated with Methotrexate. In the preceding 5 years, my Psoriasis was treated with steroids, which my GP suspects may have caused the onset of my Type 2.
Still struggling to get my head around what I can and can't eat and despite being 'good', haven't yet got my mmol below 10.
To answer a few of the other questions at the beginning of this thread... Apple, Humanist, Masters in Fine Art and Arts Practice. Films: LA Confidential, Heat, Contact, Lion, 2001, Apocalypse Now... too many to list :)

Hello, my name is Marian. I don't know why I'm in a state of shock since last FRI and being told I am T-2. After all, it was inevitable - maternal grt-grandmother, maternal grandmother, mother, three of three siblings, all diabetic, and my father was a LADA, However, I can say that of all of us, I had the oldest age before it suddenly caught up to me at 68.
My sister, the oldest of my three siblings and the one who has been diabetic the longest, is of the thinking that stress, of which there has been the most enormous amount of since FEB has had a huge part to play in it.
Anyway, I now have to bring it all under control - our mantra is what our mom's was, "No insulin injections, no insulin injections."

We live in the countryside of one of the most beautiful shires. I'm originally from the US, but since marrying twenty-one years ago England is my home.
We moved here for our dogs, so they could enjoy the freedom. What were we thinking? Working soft fruit farm, mud, white fluffy, furry dogs. And when we first moved here we were showing them - thank heaven they are double coated Samoyed and when it dries, mud falls off. Our walk starts as soon as we are out the gate and they loved it. We are down to one now, who is twelve, and he still gets himself muddy.
I love to cook (which is good because my husband loves my cooking), always looking for new recipes and trying different cuisines; but I especially love baking breads. My husband very much enjoys the different types of breads that come out of the oven. Not so much into the sourdough starter thing. Been there, done that about fifteen or more years ago. However, the breads I produce have long, slow overnight or up to three days of rising time in the refrigerator. Love that the control of the amount of salt and perhaps sugar in the bread is up to me - and there are no additives in them. My favorite bread has to be rye bread...a lovely NY deli rye bread with caraway seed. I've spent the last year perfecting it. (Okay, salivating here...)
Knitting is a passion as well as spinning yarn from the aforementioned Samoyeds. It makes some of the most beautiful, soft, fluffy and warmer than wool yarns. For the most part tho, I spin yarn from friends' dogs and make keepsake items for them.
Another little pleasure is reading or coupled with audio books when spinning or knitting - two favorite pastimes at once!
So this is boring me. We love our life in the country, the quiet, the nature around us and the views and our little tootle into the town once a week. I need to use this once again to lessen stress and hopefully get my health on a better track.

Hello everyone! Thank you for letting me Join.I have got lots of reading to do as I can see just from a quick look that there is going to be a lot of useful and important information for me to digest and learn here.I am a 53 year old female and was diagnosed 4 months ago with type 2. Currently I am managing my diabetes with diet and Metformin 500g x2 a day.I am approximately about 4 stone overweight (but I am genuinely doing my best to drop it.)I also have much restricted mobility and i am medically retired, ( due to a chronic and progressive spinal condition.Along with this i have autoimmune pernicious Anaemia and several other disabilities. So, this makes exercise extremely difficult for me.I do however try to move as much as I am able to.I am very much looking forward to meeting new people here and participating in discussions.I am a person who also loves to digest new information and am always hungry to learn new things in life .Always have been so I am keen to do the same here.I am aware of some of the "General basics" arround Diabetes ( as a former NNEB,Namcw, nursery nurse , along with a degree in early years education, child health and developement.(My career before I had to retire early due to ill health ). However, Type 2 is fairly new to me so I have have many questions to ask and lots to learn about type 2 diabetes.I look forward to getting started.

Hi my name is Maxine. I’m from Scotland and I’m 55 years old. I’m very newly diagnosed type2 after unintentionally losing a stone in 5 weeks. Complete shock to me and feeling very overwhelmed at the moment. I’m hoping to learn more on this forum and look forward to chatting to everyone.

I come from Madagascar. I'm a man. I'm here because I 've heard about the help that this community gives to the others.

Hi Maxine
Just keep a cautious eye on the situation. Rapid unintentional weight loss is more often a symptom of type 1 than type 2. Early signs of both can be confusing as insulin fits and spurts. Keep a close eye and be prepared to go back to your Gp, or even to hospital if your ketones rise rapidly while your bg also rises

Thanks. GP tested my urine and no keytones so said type2.

Hi, went for a medical on Monday and my Hba1c came back as 89 which seemed to be a shock to the doc as much as myself. Having not done much exercise till the start of lockdown when I took up running and cycling I felt much fitter at 52 than anytime previously although I do have a sweet tooth! I’m seeing my own doc this afternoon and have done some blood glucose measurements which have all been high so expecting that I will have to give up that sweet tooth.

Having a look through the forum it’s reassuring to know others are in the same boat and how helpful everyone is.

Hi, I'm Reese, known by RC

I'm not that great with IT so I'll be happy to introduce myself in my own way.

So, my name's RC, 16 years old, full-time student and retail assistant. I'm studying community learning and development (CLD).

I live in Fife, Scotland although through Edinburgh most often. I love buses and seeing new places I've never been. I'm a self proclaimed DIY and Upcycling master, seen as cheap but I love a bargain. I play piano (badly) and love music. I'm quite practical with an interest in cars and building things, I'm always fixing or doing something.

Now on to serious stuff... TW*

I was diagnosed initially with Type 2 diabetes but later was found out to be LADA (1.5). I have a thyroid issue called Hashimoto's Disease which sounds scarier than it is. I have chronic pain due to muscular problems and previous abuse. On top of that, I have Asperger's, dyslexia and Dyspraxia. I deal with nightmares from abuse. Thank you. (I'm always here if anyone wants to talk)

I'm looking for a safe place to talk about things, especially with diabetes and find people who really understand my problems, and I want to help you too!

Thank you. Take care.
