Fish except from the chippy
Hello
I’ve just joined and apologies if this subject has been dealt with elsewhere but I couldn’t find anything. I’ve been sailing through all my blood tests and managing on pills since 1986. All the results of my last tests were OK inc B12" but FBC showed a low iron count of 18 (range 14 -300.). The test was repeated and I was prescribed a course of iron pills and told to repeat the test in 6 weeks. I asked about possible causes and connections with my diabetes and was told “it was not thought to be anything sinister”. This is like giving a wig to somebody whose hair was falling out and not saying why. Any thoughts please? Alan

Hi Alan,

Research done at Warwick Uni has shown that diabetics frequently have abnormally low levels of vitamin B1, sometimes as low as 75% below a normal level. Metformin is also known to cause malabsorbtion of vitamin B12, so B vitamin supplements are often prescribed to patients on metformin.
