As a bit of a Masterchef addict I know that quite a few contributors to the forum also like to watch. I was somewhat disturbed when the press was reporting that one of the contestants had produced a soufflé which had failed to rise. He was seen to take it out of the oven when it was as flat as a boxer’s nose, yet when John Torode and Gregg Wallace were shown tucking into it, the soufflé had miraculously risen a couple of inches above the rim of its dish. This raises the question of a fix and I must confess that my suspicions had already been aroused in the previous series.
The most irritating contestant was Jackie who, when she wasn’t crying, was droning on about being a vegetarian and how it defined what she was. I watched in disbelief as she produced a dish where she had piled in an overdose of chillies and Gregg Wallace, virtually breathless from the heat and with tears running down his face says, “I can never have too many chillies. I love it.” In a further programme, after banging on again about being vegetarian she produced a meat dish which, as a vegetarian she couldn’t taste. Thus, her seasoning was total out of kilter. Yet once again the judges just remarked that the seasoning wasn’t right.
Having watched contestants who had produced superb meals being dismissed for one simple mistake, I turned to my wife and said that obviously it had been decided that Jackie was going to win as no matter how much she fouled up she was clearly being favoured. But it seemed that even the chosen ones couldn’t be carried forever and Jackie was eventually voted off after another culinary disaster.
But up she popped again in the current series when the new contestants had to cook for previous contestants. Astonishingly, she was pictured with a meat dish in front of her at one point, and later with a plate of fish. So, is she a born-again carnivore or am I just being overly suspicious?
Is the fix in from the beginning? What do other contributors think?

I think you're right - but who can be surprised? The producers understand what makes good television - and , unfortunately, a lot of the time that means the best "chef" doesn't win.

The personality that gets the best ratings wins.

The competition is secondary to the entertainment that it provides.

I love Masterchef. I think Toady and Shrek make a great double act. But I think the Australian franchise is even better.

Could be a fix.....who knows? Just enjoy the show for the entertainment value and the joy of looking at the delicious food being cooked......I'd love to be a judge on one of these programmes

Couldn't agree more

Regardless of that I don't think anyone this year is a patch on last years contestants especially Tim. They have the combined charisma of a brick except the Japanese quantum physicist woman whose stage act is getting more irritating each episode.

I thought the professional series this year was far better especially the two young chefs who came second a third.

Sid - that clip was wicked. And it had me laughing out loud.
And xyzzy, that's so true. The little Japanese weirdo has us puzzled in the BillB household. She's another Jackie, isn't she? No matter how many times she messes up, she gets through. Remember her "picnic" in the last episode.

Don't!!!! My kids were into American Wrestling when they were younger, the biggest load of rubbish.........

Kids? Younger?

I still watch it (sometimes)...

Y'know - just for the entertainment value (leave you brain at the door!)

You would need too

I was surfing the channels the other day and came across the Australian Masterchef. Remembering Didie's comment I watched it. Turned out to tbe the episode where the contestants have to cook a meal on the banks of the Seine in Paris. And you're right, Didie. I enjoyed it. It also helped that I know that area very well as Jackie and I used to regularly have time to kill before our train left for Madrid from the Gare d'Austerlitz. We handed in our car to be loaded onto the train before lunchtme but our overnight Talgo didn't leave until 8 p.m. so we used to drift around, visiting the sights of that area - Notre Dame, the little bookstalls along the river, parks and gardens, etc.
But this week's Masterchef saw the departure of the strange Japanese girl. I couldn't see how they managed to keep her after the mess she made while preparing a chocolate brownie. She was covered in chocolate, as was everything within a two yard radius. I must confess that I wouldn't like to be served by a chef in badly food-stained whites.
Who's going to win, though, is still anyone's guess. If I had to make a snap judgement I would say Sheena, but I wouldn't put money on it.
Sorry, just read this post again and it should read Shelena. Sorry ab out that.

Having caught up at last with the final three programmes, I have to say that I don’t think MasterChef is fixed - at least, not this current series. Shelina won and she was the one I was tipping to win from about the halfway mark: she was consistently good, suffered far fewer failures and produced meals that looked and sounded absolutely delicious (many of which, I noted, were low in carbs). I didn’t think Andrew was going to make it as he produced some odd-looking dishes: roast pork with strawberries didn’t exactly get me salivating. For a while there I thought Tom was going to run it close with Shelina but he began to flag a good way before the winning post.
If Shelina ever opens her own restaurant I want to know about it because whenever I’m in Britain I’ll be making a beeline for it. She was a worthy winner, in my opinion.
And on the subject of MasterChef, shouldn’t someone tell the presenters to stop describing meat as “soft”? The adjective for meat is “tender”. Soft is for mattresses.
Incidentally, did anyone see The Hairy Bikers last night? They were doing a cook’s tour of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg and in Luxo they visited the restaurant run by Luxembourg’s own Michelin-starred chef, Lea Linster. As luck would have it, our son and daughter in law have presented us with a joint birthday gift of dinner for two next month at Lea Linster’s restaurant, our first time there and our first time in a Michelin-starred restaurant. I’ll let you know what it was like.
