Am I doing this wrong by eating what I've eaten?

So I've restarted KETO will I think it is more LCHF/Paleo ATM. I also have left sided Ulcerative colitis (UC) and its sever ATM so I need to modify the diet for my UC and hopefully I'll be able to increase my good fats eventually. My question is I am on a Facebook group that follows this WOE for diabetes and I'm finding that they are very judgmental about what I eat. I've only just started again and posted my food intake for the day and automatically was told I am not looking after myself I ate yesterday tin salmon with some salad consisting of lettuce one baby cucumber 1/3 red capscium about a tablespoon of mayonnaise 1/4 Avocado, I did also have 1/3 of a carrot i know not KETO and black coffee. Dinner I ate homemade chicken crumbled with almond homemade but only managed about 1/4 of the chicken breast about 8 blueberries and 1 strawberry. Automatically I'm told I am not looking after myself I should not eat mayonnaise or any type of fruit. This has upset me especially when I have only started last few days and am wondering what I am doing wrong.

Appreciate any suggestions

thank you for reading my post

I am on diamicron 60mr but cut down to 30 today and Januvia 100.

I can't think of any reason to avoid mayonnaise and most type twos can cope with small servings of berries.
You need to be cautious about medication with a low carb diet as it can be too effective, and lower your blood glucose too much.
Personally I eat chicken thighs rather than the less fatty breast meat - and cook it on a rack with the skin on and veges underneath, as I need the fat as a source of energy, not wanting to break down protein into glucose.
Criticism without giving any reason for it is not very clever.

How was your blood sugar? Eating to your meter is personal, not a group effort usually. While soliciting advice from others can help, only you live in your body and know how you feel. Eat what works for YOU.

Hi @annabell1

I’m sorry the Facebook group has not been supportive for you. Many of the groups on Facebook are not particularly friendly so I’d see it as the problem of the people in that group rather than something you’re doing wrong.

Luckily that’s not the case on this forum and I hope you’ll be able to find the advice and support here, in a friendlier environment.

As a starting point, the thread I’m linking to below is very friendly. Members eating low carb (many of them keto) post their daily menus, swap food and recipe ideas and are generally very supportive. Please drop in, introduce yourself and join in: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today.75781/page-1556

It does sound like you have many difficult conditions to manage, and with your medication need to take care with cutting carbs, but it sounds like you’ve done that before. In terms of what you should and shouldn’t eat, my view is that you set your own rules. It’s your body, you decide what goes into it. The definitions used by others may help them. If you like mayonnaise and can incorporate it into your diet while meeting your goals, then eat it.

I presume with the medication you’re on you have a BG meter so you can see the impact of foods on your blood sugars? That’ll be your best guide, not some judgmental people on Facebook.

Do come back with any further questions and hope to see you on the What have you eaten today thread.

My BSL.... yesterday morning before eating My BSL at 11am was 5.7mmol/l and I ate a meal after I ate at 12.40pm it was 7.4 then I remembered I hadn't taken any of my medication including my diabetic medications (i dont normally forget but for some reason I did yesterday) so I took 30mg diamicron and my januvia 100mg around that time 12.40pm. about 3:30pm I checked my BSL it was 6.7. I didnt eat till about 6:30pm that night but forgot to take my BSL . When I went to bed at 12.30 my BSL was 5.7mmol/l. This morning at 9:40 my BSL was 5.9mmol/l.

Are they ok readings as only restarted this WOE two days ago and trying to work out what to eat is a bit complicated for me so not to trigger any issues for my UC as well.

the FB response really upsetted me and is making me feel a bit down so I Thank you both for your response and support I do appreciate it.

Hi @annabell1

Those readings look ok to me. You haven’t had a significant rise after eating and did return to where you started. Generally the advice is to aim for a rise of no more than 2mmols two hours after eating. A rise bigger than that means the carbohydrate content of the meal was too much for you and needs to be adjusted. Overtime you can probably get the post meal rises lower than 2, but it’s a good initial indicator. You might find this link helpful:

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

It might help you to have a more structured approach to testing your bloods so you can see progress. Testing immediately before eating and then again 2 hours after the first bite is the usual method. In this way you’ll develop an understanding of which foods/meals are ‘safe’ for you.

Thank you for the link I just had a quick look and it looks very helpful I certainly will do that.

I do have a meter my BSL is usually between 3.9mmol/l too 8mmol/l and very rarely goes above 10mmlo/l only when I have eaten food that has affected my BSL sadly what my body sometimes only tolerates because of my UC a catch 22 for me or just very bad choices.

I've been on and off with this WOE eating since beginning of the year due to my UC and have tried extra FAT but it causes issues with my UC so I get disheartened then give up and will it's a bit of a rollercoaster and have not really fully committed and understand this WOE, but I am determined this time so I think I will stick with this support group then FB for now. So thank you for your support. My UC is quite sever at the moment and I am running out of treatments and have read that LCHF/paleo/keto has helped some people who have UC but modified for their body and I also want to control my BSL as well.

Thank you again I very much appreciate it.

@annabell1

Looks to me like you are doing very well!

I think with social media of any kind, including this website, sometimes forgets that no 2 people are exactly alike. Dealing with other health concerns is very real, and something no one should dismiss. It’s a balancing act, and finding the correct balance can take time. That’s OK. T2 didn’t happen overnight, it can’ be “fixed” that fast either...

That must be a very difficult balancing act. Probably needs you to take the fats a bit slower and see which ones and how much is OK for you. I can’t think of anyone on here offhand with UC. There must be some and hopefully they’ll spot this thread and be able to help.
