Unfortunately we can't see which organisations were looked at although the full study definition of "patient groups" is
"Patient organisations have been defined as “public charities whose primary mission is to combat a particular disease or disability or to work towards improving the health and well-being of a particular population via activities including (but not limited to) providing patient education and services, funding research, and/or engaging in outreach advocacy."

I think the problem is that patient advocacy groups may start out with all the best of intentions of curing disease etc, but quickly get co-opted by pharma funds and end up being astroturfers instead. The bigger they are, the sooner they start being more concerned with self-perpetuation than their original cause, JMO.
