Dr Charles Mobbs, who lead the study, said: "Our study is the first to show that a dietary intervention alone is enough to reverse this serious complication of diabetes". Encouragingly, Dr Mobbs also believes the diet could also help with related diabetic complications such as retinopathy and neuropathy.
 
Hardly official Patch, but interesting research non the less. I wonder if the test mice lost weight, maintained their weight or put weight on that would be interesting to know too.

Considering the extreme requirements of the diet, it is not a long-term solution in adults. However, Dr. Mobbs' research indicates that exposure to the diet for a limited period may be sufficient to "reset" the gene expression and pathological process leading to kidney failure.

The researchers also identified a large array of cellular stress-related genes expressed during diabetic nephropathy not previously known to play a role in the development of this complication. The team found that the expression of these genes was also reversed in the mice on the ketogenic diet.

Dr. Mobbs and his team plan to continue to research the impact of the ketogenic diet and the mechanism by which it may reverse kidney failure in people with diabetes, and in age-related kidney failure. He believes the ketogenic diet could help treat some neurological diseases and retinopathy, a disease that results in vision loss.

They also said.......

Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have for the first time determined that the ketogenic diet, a specialized high-fat, low carbohydrate diet, MAY reverse impaired kidney function in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Now....is it the fact that it is low in carbs, high in fat or both.......I don't call that official.....

Not quite the conclusive evidence then........and in any case for some people high fat diets are not always possible or advisable, much the same as high carb diets aren't good for many people.......
I think I will wait for proper evidence from long term Human trials rather than just some 'puffed' report to satisfy the Sponsors........
 
Can't say that I know any mice with diabetes. :wink:

This study done for children on high fat ketogenic diets to control epileptic seizures and the kidney stones this diet can sometimes cause, cautions about kidney stones that can occur in anyone on a ketogenic diet and the author suggests that....."it should become part of of standard therapy in all ketogenic dieter, not just those who show elevated calcium levels.

Hi Patch,
This is news -- not what the American Diabetes Assoc. or Canadian one would recommend so far anyway.

I would have thought that a greater percentage of carbs over fat would be better because fat is high in cholesterol and bad for vascular circulation, possibly leading to heart disease and atherosclerosis. But , i guess carbs are slowly burned in comparison to fats-- is there an advantage to that?

Blimey, just thought, they must give the little squeakies DM, I know it is for research for our benefit but I am uncomfy with that and how do they do it? I thought no one knew for sure how anyone gets it?

My cat would provide them with mowses by the lab full... but they are not going to be in much of a state afterwards. Pains me but no matter how nicely I ask he says it is fun and will continue. :(

Sorry Catherine.. I am a dozy old git sometimes.. one of my jobs is online med news so when I have finished that I shove the news I find up on here ASAP before I grab a second brekkie then wake up the insulin with a bike ride. 8)
 
Fat just can't be good for you - think how good it tastes. Surely medical science works on the fact that if you like it then you'll just have to give it up, it has to be bad for you. :lol:
 
Yep......some fat with a nice steak or roast beef is lovely, adds flavour......but it ain't good to stuff yourself with it. What tastes good isn't always good for you......

I've noticed many a high fat advocate has much trouble losing weight and also some seem to have a problem with HbA1c and Bg levels as well. If fat was so good for you how does that happen then...?

Give me low fat every time......
 
Erin - fats 'burn' slower than carbs, which is why carbs spike your blood glucose readings and fats don't.

Only 20% (approx) of your blood cholesterol comes from what you eat - your liver makes the rest.

I personally believe that natural fats of any sort (that excludes trans-fats and hydrogenated fats, of course) are not bad for me if eaten in moderation. I limit my carb intake to carbs from leafy greens, salads etc - lowish-carb vegetables.

I've just posted some very interesting figures about lard on the end of the 'Viv's Diet' thread - maybe I'll try to copy it over to here.

What's the betting I'll crash the forum? techno-wimp of the year award coming up!

Hmmmm, sorry Viv but you just lost the fat is good argument in a nano second simply by giving me the image of a lump of lard.... yuk (decency stops me from posting a puke smiley)


Regardless of how good or bad fat is for me I will continue to avoid it where ever I can as I simply don't like it, I cut the fat off bacon and all other meats, I hate crackling and I don't like creamy milk or butter. So unless I turn into a mouse with kidney disease I doubt I will change the habits of a lifetime.

I restrict my carb intake and try to avoid eating too much of anything else but other than that nothing is off the menu to me unless, like fat, I don't like it :D
