It's official - FAT is GOOD!!!

Sorry to upset your morning, Sid :D . Your choice, fat or no-fat, and lard is very off-putting, I will agree.

The leader of one slimming club I went to used to measure weight loss in packets of lard - 1lb = 2 packets of lard; 1 stone = 28 packets of lard. Really brings it home to you!

I don't dislike much in the way of food, but I'm lucky in one thing - I really cannot bear cheesecake! One temptation less, then!

But what is HIGH fat ? The GDA for men is 95 gm per day and for women 70gm. Does HIGH fat mean that they are eating over these amounts (((((shudder)))))) !

I am lucky if I eat 20-30 gms of fat in a day, about what I can tolerate.

However the fats I do eat are all natural fats, milk, cheese , butter, fats on meat etc. I do not eat any of the low fat spreads or processed foods.

Does anyone, anywhere, have a definitive definition of what other Low carbers mean when they say they are eating HIGH fat ?

Hi its me the skinny trying to put weight on one I always seem to get involved in these sort of discussions coming from another angle  I thought that I ate high fat because I still havent quite reached 7 stone I eat cheese butter cream for instance I have cheese on Burgen toast for breakfast followed by double cream with walnuts I snack on brazil nuts I also add cream to home made soups I have never tried to count how much fat I eat but 70g seems an awful lot The meat I eat is usually locally sourced and I dont eat processed food if at all possible I also obviously lowish carb ,my latest HbA1c was 6.9 According to Vivs diet I should be losing weight :!: Diabetes is a mystery to me.

Carol.
The thing is that whatever anybody tells you about eating more Fat is that there are over twice as many Calories in Fat (9) as there are in both Protein (4) and Carbs (4) ........you can't ignore that if you need to put ON or maintain weight.

Low/reducedCarbs for the Bg control, but calories are also important for some people.

In the interest of us oldies a conversion from grammes to ozs proves a better visual idea.

Me again , How much actual fat is in (fat) ie a knob of butter on my veg, a slug of cream in my soup ,I can work out how much cheese on my toast but how much in a handful of nuts? How do I know if I am eating too much fat?.I understand what you are saying about calories Ken but is there any way to up calories without upping carbs or fat . I think I will go out for a chip buttie and a scotch pie followed by a deep fried mars bar

A 10g serving of LurpaK spreadable (what I use) contains 8g fat. Other brands will probably be differently. Cream........single contains around 18g per 100mil. Nuts will have the fat value listed by weight so that can easily be worked out. Once you know the relative values you will be able to do it from memory rather than counting and weighing all the time. I know the values of most of my usual foods now without having to look them up, makes life easier.

I do not count fat much as I am aware of the higher fat foods but I carefully count the carbs.

What I think you need to do is look at the foods you like, check the carb/fat values then look at the labels and find the ones that are higher in calories. They are out there but you will have to do your homework........once you find them, you will be able to see if upping the calories a bit more helps.

I'll join you in a chip Buttie but forget the egg and the Mars Bar....... :D

In old money, 1 ounce = 25g.

25g (1 oz) butter = 25 x 9 = 225 calories. 8 oz packet of butter = 8 x 225 which equals 1800 calories.

I eat 1 packet of butter every week, which means approx. 260 of my daily calories comes from butter = 29g fat (approx).

More later, when I've counted the mayonnaise, eggs, cheese etc.

Sorry Ken, I think I'm probably over that 70g daily - and still losing weight, dropping BGs and cholesterol, and feeling better and better and more energised as time goes on. We are all different !

YDMV! IDIC!

More later when I've counted everything.

No need to be sorry at all Viv. What you are doing is working well for you. I don't have a problem with that at all. You know that I don't have anything like as much fat as you, yet I too have similar results. As I have said before.......more than one way to do things. I never was one to follow blindly....

Weight still dropping, Bg levels all under control, lipids etc all good, BP excellent, boundless energy, vitality and fitness. Mind as sharp as the proverbial. Quality of life fantastic........ :D

So.....Vive le difference !!!

WAPTMI......IMHO :D

Yeh? WAPTMI ?
Chicken about the egg and mars bar but thanks for the advice
I am the one in the supermarket muttering about why I cant find full fat anything anywhere cos everyone is on a diet
