Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi, Im male 47 and I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in February of this year after I was advised to go to A+E with blood/glucose levels over 33mmol. I have been on Metformin 2 tablets in a morning and 2 tablets before tea and Gliclazide 1 tablet in morning and 1 tablet before tea since March. Over the last 2 months I have started running, swimming and roller skating more than ever. I have been on a really low carb diet and trying to get into Ketosis but just not quite getting my carbs low enough. I have lost 2 stone and feel in the best shape Ive been for years. I havent taken my Metformin/Gliclazide now for over a month and my blood/glucose levels have been between 3.4(lowest) and 7.8(highest) although the average is about 5.2. Do you think I was misdiagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes or am I just controlling it with my diet abd exercise?

I think you are controlling it with with your diet and exercise. If you reached 33mmol in February I shouldn't risk doing it again.

33mmol sounds pretty high and would suggest diabetes. Did you not have a HBA1C test done as that would of shown a better average over a longer period?

I would suggest that you are controlling it with your weight loss, exercise and diet. You should discuss with your Dr because if you are convinced that you were mis-diagnosed and he agrees there is a test you can do to prove it. I would see what the next three months brings and your next HBA1C test suggests - if it were me that is.

BTW - you have done brilliantly! To have got off those drugs so quickly and got your levels that low - well it is amazing - well done.

Well done on turning things around. I agree that the HbA1c readings are vital and I would always advocate seeing your gp before changing any regimen re meds, having said that, it seems to have worked out very well for you. Way to go!

Presumably you had an HbA1c in order to be diagnosed and prescribed those medications. Do you know what it was, and when your next one is?

It's all looking positive though.

From 33 down to 3.4! That really is an effort worth noting. But don't get complacent!

That test will only show the current state, not if someone had type2 before losing the weight etc.

I don't know what my HbA1c reading was but when I last saw my Diabetes nurse about 6 weeks ago she told me that Id been naughty and that my levels were less under control than they were back in February. I asked her how they could be when my blood levels have all been in the normal ranges whenever Ive tested them (which is usually twice if not three times a day) at which point she said she would have to have a word with the specialist as she coukdnt understand either. I explained that I was trying to get into Ketosis as Id read good things about it on the internet and she also advised me that it wasnt such a good idea because I have to have carbs because Im a diabetic. Im not convinced and that is why Im trying my own diet/exercise regime and stopped the meds to see what my next results are.

Depending on how you are testing for Ketosis, it is very possible to be in Ketosis but not get a positive test.

Nursey sounds like an idiot and best ignored.. you can see from your results that you are doing really well. I stopped taking metformin without any medical "approval" because I was tied to the toilet. Now diet controlled and pretty happy .. I saw my Diabetes Nurse last week who stated that she was amazed by my HbA1c results and had never seen anything like it. But she still couldn't get her head around it when I told her how I had done it...

Hi @daz6170 ,

Welcome to the forum!

I does sound like you're doing great.
Testing; try it when you wake, then prior to having a meal & 2 hours after, then just before bed?
Log the figures with the food eaten to build up a picture over the days...

Your nurse sounds like mine 40 years ago.. Lol, but I'm a T1! I feel from what I read of general experiences on this matter, is they apply this "rule of thumb" to all... A bit outdated for IDs even. Especially with the advent of MDI many years back! ;)

Best of luck to you..

Hi. Well done anyway. You have diabetes - no doubt. The Gliclazide together with the right diet will be helping a lot. If you go too low you may need to agree reducing the Gliclazide as it can cause hypos. If you were not overweight by much at diagnosis it is always possible that you are a T1 in the Honeymoon period. Hopefully your blood sugar will stay down but if creeps back up then do get the tests for T1. I've been down that route.

Personally I consider Metformin to be of benefit if the **** side effects don't last for long, as it helps break the cycle of insulin resistance and hence makes Low Carb and/or Intermittent Fasting work better. (Gliclazide is a different matter, but no one can advice anyone to ignore their GP, however reduce any mad slowly monitoring BG as you go along if YOU decide to do so.)

(The best part of having a prescription for Gliclazide is that the GP has to give you a meter and test strip due to the rules on driving, having a prescription for Gliclazide does not increase Insulin Resistance unless it is used.....)

Well, I was very surprised when I saw my nurse for the first time a couple of weeks ago. She said to me "You have lost weight" I said yes and explained that I was doing the low carb diet etc. She looked up and said "Oh I won't even touch bread, potatoes, pasta, rice etc" and explained that she only eats veg and meat, salads, eggs, cheese. She told me that she no longer felt bloated and lost weight. I told her about this forum and how many people are doing well on this diet, and she agreed and said that some of her patients who are on a low carb diet are doing really well : )

Hi, how are you sure I have Diabetes? I haven't taken any Metformin or Gliclazide tablets for over a month and my blood/glucose tests have been within the normal range all the time. The weekend I was taken into A and E and diagnosed was when I had drunk 2 litres of Lucozade, w

I've only tested with the Ketostix that my diabetes nurse prescribed for me but they never change from the very first colour.

You may not like the answer but if you were taken into A&E with sky high blood sugar then at the time you obviously had diabetes.

People without diabetes can drink litres of sugary drinks, eat loads of sweets, neck down a bag of sugar and still have normal BG levels.

There are many on this forum who achieve normal BG readings through lifestyle, but who are still diabetic.

About the Ketostix - they don't always show ketones when you are in ketosis but they usually do.
Probably you are still eating too many carbohydrates to get into and stay in ketosis.
It can take a few weeks to adapt, and any day you eat too many carbohydrates can take you right back to the start again.

Yeah, you are right there. I just cant seem to work out exactly how low on carbs I need to go to get me into Keto, and over what period of time.
