Just diagnosed T2

I have just been diagnosed with T2 and am awaiting an appointment with a dietitian. I am overweight and although I have previously lost weight on an Atkins diet my doctor has warned me I cannot do this again, I have cut out all cakes and sweets ( I have a sweet tooth) but have also been told no berries but I can eat apples and bananas. Obviously it is all a little confusing right now but would it be useful for me to get a monitor and are there any models which are particularly good. Would I also need to buy strips? I am to be tested again in three months to assess my weight and what difference dieting has made to my blood sugar levels.
 
Welcome, plenty of good advice on here, some great people!

Have a look around, read some similar threads, and decide what you need to do , you've started, hopefully you can get yourself to where you want to be!

I recommend low carbing and testing, with the right exercise!
 
Berries are lower carb apples or bananas so not sure why they have that advice.
Most people self funding seem to use the SR codefree meter available on Amazon from HOme Health.

Cold ethyl's finger must have slipped there - to avoid confusion it's the SD Codefree meter. This has the most cost-effective strips.

You will also need to cut out bread, pasta, rice and potatoes to manage your blood glucose levels. Did your GP tell you what your diagnosis levels were? If not ask for them, they have to print them out for you.

Your dietitian may well advise you to eat carbs with every meal. This is the wrong advice for T2s, carbs = sugar for us. But welcome, you're in a great place here - read around and ask questions.
 
Yes I meant SD but didn't type it. My brain feels like it has taken a vacation today without permission. Going to have to get in routine of getting up at same time every day as I feel all out of sorts having had bad night and a long semi asleep lie in. BS reflecting this.
Why were you told not to try Atkins again?
 
Atkins works, but add more veg, otherwise it really does get boring.

I was told to eat brown bread, pasta, potatoes and brown rice in moderation. I did Atkins some years ago (pre diagnosis) with great success but doc says it is an absolute no-no with diabestes.
 
Sorry Limelight, your doctor's carb advice so far has been appalling in my opinion. Dangerous even It will make you worse, not better. If there is no other reason not to do the modified Atkins diet, then I think that is your best way forward.

That really is terrible advice - all too common unfortunately.

You will get loads of fantastic support and information from the good people on this forum.
I have to agree with the advice above, that unless there is very good reason for following a lower carb diet then your doctor is misinformed.

Jeez, and we wonder why diabetics get their legs cut off.
