Just did my first meter test, what do the results mean?

OK, I have now worked out how to use the stabber properly.

Pre Dinner reading 5.9 (good I think)
We shall see what middle Eastern chicken and chickpea stew with a small side of sweet potato rice does to me at around 9pm I guess

If you have a problem with that meal, bear in mind that sweet potato has more carbs than ordinary potato, despite often being recommended for diabetics.

Thanks, that's good to know.

I actually wouldn't have bothered with the sweet potato rice but I wanted to push a little bit to see what the impact would be. With the rice, and chickpeas and the fact I had a slightly larger portion than 1 serving MyFitnessPal reckons dinner was close to 60g of carbs. I know that's very high for a lot here but I figured it would be good to know some limits.

That's sensible in my opinion. No point being more strict than you need. Keep testing and you will soon find out what suits you and what doesn't.

I use a Accu-Chek Fastclik lancing device which has a drum of six lancets in it, as far as I am concerned these are best sort of devices to use as you do not have the problem of sharps storage for one reason.

I change lancets when I go through a tub of fifty strips weekly. I have the depth setting on three as I find that's the best depth to get the best results for my fingers & thumbs.

@MoorT2 I would recommend you get one as they are pretty much 99.9% painless.

Both are availble from Amazon UK for a reasonable price.

Thank you @Riva_Roxaban , I'll look into those!

I'm sure you've all be waiting on the edge of your seats to hear what my post meal blood readings were. I shall keep you in suspense no longer.

8.2 mmol

That was an increase of 2.3 on the reading just before dinner. So what does this mean, how bad is it, does this start to indicate my carb limits as it was over 7.8?

Thank you for the help and advice, it's much appreciated by this noob!!

Not too bad at all. You are aiming for a rise of not more than 2...so a bit high. As you said, 7.8 is your target, so you aren't far off. Just a bit of tweaking needed. Try some other meals and see how you go with them.
Well done. You will get there.

Don't forget the ±10% meter variance, so near enough, close enough.

sounds good to me : )

Thank you, very thoughtful of you! :hilarious:
Results don't look too bad at all! If you'd like to see your post meal numbers a tad lower there's room enough to adjust your meal without needing to go very low carb.
Keep testing and stay curious!

I think I'm trying to establish what a normal / safe reading would be.

If 8.2 is acceptable then it's very easy to maintain meals of that level. If the 7.8 is the upper end of a normal response then I do need to pull those carbs back a little further.

I guess it's early days for me and I"m trying to figure out how far things have gone. I'd really like my Feb HbA1C result to be in the 30s without the meds.

That 8.2 is not too bad considering your starting level of 5.9.
Please report back with fasting level in the morning.

Remember in the early days carbs really are the enemy so cut back on the sweet potatoes.
Evidence & studies show us that the beta cells that have given up in your pancreas can take up to a year to recover full function once the stresses have been removed

What we don't know yet is what your wiggle room is like.
Are you morbidly obese, completely sedentary, carbaholic ?

I reckon you've got this already.

Morning reading is 7.6 ☹️

BMI is about 28, I'm trying to be active exercising most days (jogging or swimming)

Don't worry about the fasting bg. That is usually the last one to come into line. When you start to low carb your liver starts to throw out excess glucose in the morning to give you energy for the day ahead. It's a good thing really as it means it is slimming down. Stick with it, this phase may last a few weeks, but you will get there.

Oh and whilst exercise is brilliant, I would expect diet to be the most important factor in weight loss.

I'm trying to do both, over 30kg lost in 4 months (actually worrying I'm losing it too quick).

Down 700g on yesterday despite the 'high' glucose readings - so positive there

I'm envious lol

The instructions for my meter (who reads the instructions?) tell me that prior to the fingerprick test I should wash and dry my hands and then rub the chosen fingertip for 20 seconds. It certainly improves the ease of getting the blood.
