Hi

Have finally been given a meter, was told how to use it and got that part no problem - however im a bit confused on my readings and what to do.....for breakfast i had a piece of burgen toasted with 2 poached eggs - 2 hours later i got a reading of 6.1, lunch i had some homemade vege soup (no potatos or barley etc) and a piece of quiche, and i was 9.9, and now im freaking out! what do i do with a high number? do i eat something like a protein to bring it down?

I dont take any medication, but maybe i will have to?

Hi angla

First what sort of veg was in the soup - some veg like carrots are quite high in carbs and also the quiche pastry can be very carbiferous.

Also some of us are more sensitive to carbs art different times of the day - many of us have ahigh sensitivity first thing inthe morning for instance.

Keep testing and you will find out what you can and can't eat -

Hi angela
don't worry your levels are a lot lower than mine was initialy i was in the upper 20's as a lot of others on here. The good thing is you have your meter and you can test to see whats good or bad for you. There is some really usefull fellow diabetic's on the forum they really know the ins and outs .
JF :D
Be happy :?

Having a couple of glasses of water can do wonders for slightly high levels. Going for a walk is also another way to compliment blood sugar control.

Hi Angela

Your 6.1 was good, well within the recommended range for Type 2. Don't start panicking just yet! Use your first week with a meter to check what your usual diet does to you - then you can work out what affects you. As Anniep says, it could have been whatever veg was in the soup, and also the pastry.

Did you check again in another hour to make sure things were coming down? As far as I know there's nothing you can eat to help it drop, though moderate exercise might. Can anyone out there help us on this? I'm interested too!

How are your latest readings? let us know.

Viv :)

Went to the gym after lunch and tested after and it was 5.3 (thank god), didnt have any afternoon tea as i tested after having a coffee (with equal tablet, so no real sugar) and it was 6.3, didnt eat anything until tea as i was to scared that eating my apple would make me high.......but i was really hungry, should i have had my apple with a reading of 6.3???

thanks for all the advice so far!

Angela.
It all depends what an Apple does to YOUR Bg levels ? Some people can manage Apples or portions of an Apple quite happily, others have been know to go much higher. You will have to test to see what effect it has on YOU.........

I can eat a small Pink Lady with little or no effect......a larger one does show a different, higher result though. An Apple plus a little strong cheese is a good snack and the fat in the cheese slows down the absorption. Evens out the Bg levels, for me anyway...... :)
