I have had my diabetic review this morning, the first since I started low carbing. I was hoping for a reduction in my HBA1C, although I've only been on the low carb diet for 6 weeks and I've also been reducing my use of insulin during that time.

Well, here are the results, including cholesterol and whilst there's more work to do I'm pretty pleased.

HBA1C 7.2 (my best ever HBA1C and down from 10 in mid Dec)

Cholesterol - 3.0
HDL - 1
LDL - 1.7
Triglyceride - 0.79

I have explained that I am attempting to get off the insulin altogether and my DBS is going to recommend one of the new style drugs (Sitaglyptin?) if my doctor agrees. She was very interested in my low carbing (which she has been doing herself as an experiment on weight loss). She said that she was aware that low carbing was at odds with the NHS standard line for diabetics, but that she was preparing a paper for the practice doctors as she believes it's a better therapy for type 2 diabetics. So she was delighted with my results (and graphs) as evidence of the effect it can have in such a short space of time.

I should know tomorrow whether they will approve my change in medication.

Onwards and upwards

Well done Swimmer! You should be proud of yourself :)

Well done swimmer what brilliant news.

Well done...it is very encouraging reading other people's success stories...maybe there is still hope :)

Well done and good to see you have an enlightened nurse. Sitagliptin is an apparently good drug with few side effects and it's mechanism is quite simple i.e. it allows the pancreas to produce insulin for longer at mealtime by suppressing the enzyme that switches it off (correctly or incorrectly). It doesn't cause hypos as it's effect is reduced as BS comes down near to normal.

aw thanks guys and gals.. so glad it wasn't bad news (phew)..

I knew my DB nurse had a brain but I was still worried that she was going to disagree. Having listened to the You and Yours interview I think I'm lucky to have her.

Yes ! Sincere congratulations - on your resuls but paricularly on your nurse! Make sure she stays! Send her flowers or whatever i takes. What a treasure . Think I might move!

Just an update.

My DB specialist called me today to confirm that I now have a prescription for 100mg of Sitaglyptin once per day. They want me to stop using the Lantus (long acting insulin) if my levels will stand it - I have already stopped using the Novorapid.
She has warned me it might make my levels go a bit low at that dose, but that's the minimum tablet size.

So we're in to phase two - 3 months on tablets only. If I can manage it and reduce my HBA1C even further, then I'll push to have the insulin taken off my prescription altogether and I can approach the DVLA to try and get my full license back.

just keep swimming ... :D
