Just had to share - testing

Thanks all for the encouragement - I have a question which I hope to get some input for (as per usual).

My Bg is not just coming down, but virtually coming tumbling down! This morning my Bg was 6.4!!

I get the Low Carb (sorry Moderate Carb) diet for losing the weight (and I am slowly and steadily) and getting the numbers down, but they way my numbers are falling I am starting to think, how to maintain low numbers when first I get there? Staying on low carb (appx 30/day) will obviosly help me loose the weight I need to but am I in danger of my Bg going too low at the same time? Or will the number stabalise by themselves? Or if the Bg goes below 5 will I have to increase carb intake to ensure stability?

I know how the weight-thing works and I expected to reach my target weight and numbers in about 3 months and would then go on Low Gi with a reduced carb diet. But I am now unsure what to do with the Bg dropping as fast as it is. However, I am relucant to increase Carbs as I also want to loose the weight.

Any advice / thoughts / sharing of expereince VERY much appreciated - as I am somewhat confused now! Help!

I found the same as you - i.e. a big change in my BG levels as soon as I changed my diet.

My GP keeps telling me that there isn't any chance of me going too low just so long as I'm on diet and metformin only. The same should apply to you on diet only. My GP says if I feel strange in anyway then all I ought to do is have something to eat. Exactly the same advice as he would give to a non-diabetic situation. He insists that I have no chance of going 'hypo'.

Suggestion: keep some glucose tabs or fruit juice within reach just in case you blow it.

Over time my BG has come nicely into line, the control system seldom overshoots now in either direction.

This kinda gives the lie to the idea that testing "causes anxiety". testing is a major buzz WHEN you use the results to improve rather than just writing them down and eating more toast.

In a week (7 days) testing my fasting Bg in the morning, I have gone from 7.4 to 5.4 this morning - although this morning the reading was taken later than usual as I woke up late  and I was snoozing happily in bed for a bit!

I am tired today - for no apparent reason, so tested again 1 hour after breakfast and it was 7.1, so suppose I am just having a "lazy day", which has happened before too!! lol

I am just amazed how my Bg have dropped - well tumbled down in just a week! It took 3 weeks to go from 14.7 to 7.7 (whilst getting from 200 carbs/day to 50) - I can only contribute this to the low carb diet which I have held steady on around 30g/day with a couple of days below that and one day below 20 (no idea how that happened!) for the last 10 days.

Strangely, I am finding easier to cut out carbs than to ensure hitting 30/day!! Don't really miss bread and potatos, but longed to have some rice or pasta!!

I might just get some wholewheat pasta for the weekend and see what my Bg does on adding a small portion to my lunch and/or evening meal.

Anybody got any thoughts? As ever grateful for your input and sorry for all these questions, it is still so new to me, 5 weeks down the line.

Thanks
Alice

Hi Alice,
Just a thought here please excuse me,
I have found that i can have wild rice, You can buy it in asda that is where i get it from!
I found I had it the other day, i found no difference to blood sugar what so ever! The blood sugar before meal was 7.9, 2 hours after meal was 7.9 so no difference, i had it as a treat!
You might find the same! Just a thought!
Well done on the blood numbers! Wow they are good!
I had not had rice since feb when i joined the site! Last weekend was my turn to make curry and rice for me and a few friends, I found the wild rice was really nice, I thought it would be a wild one, Nice rice tasty!
another one is califlower rice, must admit i thought no, But followed sugarless sue's recipe in the reduced carbs section! And was shocked how nice it was!
Sorry sue i pinched your califlower rice recipe, Can you ever forgive me? It was really nice.
Sandy

Good point, I had some wild rice (pub meal) which didn't do as much harm as I half expected. I also find quinoa a useful carb substitute (test though as it doesn't agree with everyone)

Astonishing improvement already! Make an appointment for another photo in six months <G>
