Keeping On Track - after the Newcastle/Mosely Diet

Congrats @muzza3 for getting your sugars down. I have always wondered what happens after people hit their target weights and sugar. Personally I think I would be increasing the fats and carbs until I leveled both out where I wasn't affecting my blood sugars and I wasn't losing weight. If either caused a reversal, then Id increase the other and reduce the offending one.
PS I am aiming only to lose 1 -2 lb a week so my skin has a chance to adapt and mainten its elasticity. So far I have calculated my diet properly where I lose 2lb a week and see a drop in BS.
Thanks Kyi
Its a great question about hitting target sugars and weights. I pretty much agree with your thoughts although I think my focus will probably be more on reacting to any increase in BG levels and certainly an upper level for weight where If I exceed say 80kg I use the skills we all are acquiring on this journey to return to my target weight area

Congratulations on your control and weight loss. It makes sense and the skin elasticity is a concern for many of us

Just a brief update

BFG was 3.9 this morning the lowest I have ever recorded and following only 24g of carb yesterday also the lowest I have had in a day. No brain surgery required to make that link!!

Did you feel okay so low? You might find you need to plan for random lows now. I keep frozen cherries or those little tomatoes on hand to raise my BG a little bit at a time if I start to feel worried about it.

I find on the rare occasions that I get in to the 3s I don't feel like I'm going to hypo, yet before I started low carbing, I would start to feel 'odd' in the low 6s/high 5s (not that it happened often, it was mostly 17 or above.)

Thanks Chook
I have really appreciated your support on this journey. My goal when I first started with the ND was 79Kg or 172.4 lb. That will have me at the bottom end of overweight on the BMI scale. I see no need to change that at this stage so about 20lbs to go
I do sometimes wonder about the BMI chart, most people at the perfect BMI weight always seem too slender. I think you are choosing your target wisely - you can always revise it at a later date if you want. I have chosen a target weight one pound under the bottom end of overweight just so that I can go to the doctor and he can't blame any ailments might have on my weight.

I have not experienced a Hypo and at the moment I feel great. But I will heed your advice and pay attention to how I am feeling with these lower levels.

3 Weeks after ND

BFG 4.1
Weight loss this week 4.19lb
190lb

Blood Glucose levels have been fantastic with a seven day average of 4.8
Focused on keeping carbs under 50g each day and believe this had a big impact. I worked hard this week but I am delighted with the result. Daily calories calories thru the week varied between 1200 and 1500, A big week this week with 4 days off work and traveling to a big race meeting and also catching up with friends.

And what a ****** I have to replace my entire wardrobe as nothing fits anymore. Of course it is fantastic but it is really hurting the hip pocket

Well into week 4 of LCHF with a total loss of 6.8lb over the three weeks to date.
Yesterday I experimented with a carb dump of 91g 3 x Sausage Rolls and Packet of Chips. I have being thinking about doing this for a few weeks but my wife's homemade Sausage Rolls were the excuse
SBG 5.1
2 Hours 10.8
3 Hours 7.5
4 Hours 5.5
BFG this morning 4.7

I suppose the positive was that everything returned to normal but the negative was the time it took. I might add that it felt like I had two bricks in my stomach and did for that whole time.

So back to a <50g carb day today

Cheers

Brave experiment!! :). I've been low carbing for nearly a year now and I think I am too scared of carbs now to attempt anything like that. I love it that your FBG this morning was back to 4.7.

I agree. I'm too chicken to try that. I am so carb sensitive now and they don't feel good in my tummy either

Well coming to the end of week 4 and I am a little nervous
Just got back from a few days away including a reunion with a few old work mates and a day at the races. i did still exercise each morning and kept to low carb foods but a lot more calories than normal and had 5 beers and half a dozen wines. No scales either so I am not looking forward to checking the weight in the morning but was surprised with a BFG of 3.9 this morning

Well done with eating low carb foods while you were away - it's not easy sticking to low carb when you aren't in complete control of your food. You obviously did well though otherwise you wouldn't have woken up to a 3.9 this morning! :)

Thanks Chook. I hope you are well
Yes carb wise I was pretty good not so much on the calories and Grog. I had a pretty controlled day today and will do tomorrow but not looking forward to jumping on the scales in the morning

I'm fine, thank you for asking :) I'm sure the scales will be kind to you and well done for being so controlled since you got back. It's important to enjoy life as well as getting healthy - otherwise what's the point? ;)

4 Weeks after ND
Weight-loss this week 0.6lb
FBG 3.9 to 4.7 range
12th consecutive week of weight-loss

What an interesting week this was. I was away at a reunion of some ex workmates for two nights and three days. it involved six meals at Pubs/restaurants and 2 functions of 4-5 hours each of sociable drinking with people I hadn't seen for many years. I was impressed without to much thinking that I picked out low carb options at all meals(leaving potatoes etc on the plate) and still had probably seven beers and six red wines across the functions.

To do all this and have no blow out in BG's and weight gives me great encouragement for being able to maintain my BG's and weight in the future once I hit my goal.

However I am determined to move forward to my goal 172.4 lb (another 17lbs) as quickly as is possible.

So this week I am restricting both Carbs and Calories with a daily net target (Less exercise calories) of 1000 calories. By my calculations with my regular exercise this should see me with a weekly calorie deficit of 12000 calories which should translate to approx 4lbs weight-loss. The menus will be all LCHF.

By the way I had a really enjoyable time as well

Well 2 days into my 1000cals LCHF a day experiment for this week as I try to give my weight-loss a kick along after a just so week last week.
I can already notice the loss of energy (very tired tonight) but otherwise feeling fine. The scales are tipping in the right direction although I don't record the daily weigh ins just use them as a guide until I record my weight each Sunday.

FBG's remain in the 4's every day and not testing during the day as I have not introduced any new foods this week. I have thought about maybe testing before bed just for interest and I might try that for a few days

Potential little victories this week to spur me on
Crack the 85Kg mark
Break into the 28's BMI
Overall weight loss exceed 20kg

You are doing very, very well. :) I will be interested in finding out if you prefer the proper foods 1,000 calories to the 800 cal. shakes? And whether you're finding it easier or more difficult.

I like your potential little victories - nice idea to look forward like that and have small interim goals rather than just keeping plodding on dwelling how far away the end target is. I think I'm going to borrow that idea! ;)

Hi Chook
Yes the little victory goals I have been using right thru (Its been easy as I have been counting in Metric and Imperial so it give me extras). They work well for me so I hope they are of use for you.

I really prefer the proper foods in terms of eating and satisfaction. But I firmly believe in terms of the ND or Eight week diet that the shakes and Veges are better as Mosley for example has you shopping for food and in the kitchen preparing meals creating too many temptations. Also if you have any of life's interruptions, ie work, family emergencies etc, it is still easy to grab the shake while it may be impossible to prepare a meal

I'll have to start record keeping in metric to get the extra potential little victories. :) :) :)

Good reasoning about the shakes -v- food. I think I might order in some shakes and keep one in my bag with me for emergencies - if I can find a brand low enough in carbs.

Sounds like a good idea Chook if you can find one that is suitable I should add that with the ones I was using you couldn't mix them with a spoon really needed a mixer/blender of some kind. Also I have a confession as well. Before I started the Newcastle diet I had also read The Eight Week Diet and one of the turnoffs for me was Mediterranean style food - I personally believe it belongs at the bottom of the Mediterranean- Sea that is. My other concern was that no one had actually tested the Mosley diet as they had the Newcastle Diet so I went with the science

Ah, my work bag is enormous and full of all kinds of clutter but there definitely isn't a blender in there.

The other problem with the shakes (for me) is that they all seem to have quite a few carbs in them - well, the ones that I can get delivered by my supermarket are. The attraction of 800 calories of food was that I could chose to keep the carbs at my current 20-30g carbs per day.

I don't know about Mediterranean :) I just eat the kind of food that I like and that fits in with low carb AND low calorie. I do eat a lot of veg. though.
