Keto Diet Feeling Hungry

Are you keeping up your electrolytes? Apparently a lack of sodium can cause hunger & cravings.

Maybe give an example of what/how much you're eating :)

A 'Keto' diet simply means that you are trying to remain in ketosis - it is not necessary to be hungry - you can eat whenever you are hungry - though a common error is to to try to keep to low fat in the mistaken belief that is a good thing.
Maybe a big bag of salad and a roast chicken would solve the problem?

I am having raspberries and ff yoghurt for breakfast
Tuna or egg mayo salad with half an advacado and a few olives for lunch
Evening meal tonight was bolognaise with cauliflower with added cheese
A few Brazil’s
Strawberries and cream
4 squares 90% chocolate
Tea and coffees

So I don’t think I should be hungry or craving

What my doing wrong.

Took just over 3 weeks for carb cravings to subside for me. Kept the hunger pangs at bay with cheese, nuts and olives.

Some fatty roast pork belly always works to keep hunger away from me... ;)

It's generally best not to worry too much about calories &/or a little weight gain at first - you need to give your body sufficient time to adjust to this way of eating & you are very early in the process. If you're still hungry then add some more fat to your meals & if you're peeing a lot & drinking sufficient water each day then you may need to add more salt.

FF yogurt is possibly not the thing, full fat would be better, they replace the fat with sugar to make it "taste", which is an abomination in my eyes.

It takes a little while for every thing to kick in and then settle down.
Sounds as if you've made a good start to the new ways.

Thanks for replies, does my food diary sound ok? I am using full fat Greek yoghurt. Will the weight start to come off? I did have a bit of a binge on salted peanuts 2 days ago as very hungry.

Food diary doesn't sound too bad though I've no idea of portion sizes so it could be that you're eating a few too many carbs right now to enable you to adapt. I'm not sure if you're on any meds & what sort of blood glucose readings you're getting so I'm loathe to guess too much.....you need to be careful going keto if you're on any meds other than metformin.

Re: the peanut cravings - could well be that you were really just craving the salt that comes with them & I've also heard that savoury/umami cravings can be a result of too little protein in the diet.

Possibly too little protein I was worried about too much. I’m meds are 10mg dapagliflozin,5mg saxagliptin and 2000 mg met form in.

I'm not on any meds but if yours are the kind that force the pancreas to produce more insulin then you will need to keep a very close eye on how your blood sugar is responding to the diet.

As to protein - how much is too much is a matter of much debate in the low carb community but all agree that too little is no good for you. I personally find I can eat quite a bit of protein (I find it more satiating than fat) without it negatively impacting my weight or my blood glucose but a good starting point would be 1 gram of protein per kilo of reasonable ideal body weight. You can always adjust levels depending on how your blood glucose/body weight reacts.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge of your meds will spot this post & be able to add to it :)

We're all here to ask questions & get support @meJulie - you won't be annoying anyone :)

Take care of yourself & remember to keep a beady eye on your blood sugar levels.

70 grams of protein doesn't mean 70 grams of food. One egg for example has about 6 grams so theoretically you could eat 11 1/2 eggs a day to get to your target!

If you want to know how much is in a food just google "how much protein in 100 grams of (whatever food eg chicken thigh)" & you'll get an answer.
