Hi all

Ok so i follow the primal blueprint but am also keto. The diet has worked as im half way on my weightloss journey. But to keep my willpower up i allow myself one cheat meal a week. That keeps me on the diet and keeps me from getting bored. I have a croissant with GU chocolate spread on. Its not halted my weight loss im still loosing weight but a fellow dieter told me i should not cheat on the keto diet. But i dont see why i cant as im still loosing weight and im 100% keto the rest of the day and the other 6 days a week. Surely 1 crossiant wont damage my weight loss. It keeps me on my keto path the other 6 days a week.

Possibly they are referring to being kicked out of ketosis by your cheat and then getting back into it. For some people this is very difficult and potentially stalls them and for others it’s a natural switch in and out as they are metabolically flexible.

There's a difference between being in ketosis and eating a keto way most of the time. If I eat a croissant, (and yours sound mouth watering) I drop out of ketosis, which is fatburning mode. And it takes me about a week of keto flu and massive carb cravings to get back in. Others just shift in and out with no issues, while some, like me, pay dearly. If you can do it and it helps you keep it up, knock yourself out, and spare me a thought when you have the next one eh. ;)

I can't see from your profile, are you diabetic? If so, what type?

I am low carb, not keto, but try to avoid any major cheats as even one day a week risks me coming out of remission, and higher blood sugars could lead to eye damage or more neuropathy (I already had non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy). If you are not diabetic and switch ketosis on and off but still lose weight then I don't see why that would be a problem.

I am not diabetic. They thought i was prediabetic but my bloods are normal so I've been told im not diabetic.

Im doing keto just for the weight loss as i have a lot of weight to loose and know that low carb can help loose weight.

Having that 1 croissant helps keep me motivated the rest of the time.

I would happily make keto pancakes and make a keto chocolate syrup to pour over but the recipes i like both ask for vanilla extract and the only one my local supermarket has that i can afford is dr oetker madagascan vanilla extract but its full of sugar. I can afford the ones that have no or low sugar in so if i used this vanilla extract would it send me out of keto?

A vanilla extract usually just requires a few drops, right, maybe a teaspoon? Should be alright, you're not downing the whole bottle. There's syrups you can buy which are no carb (Walden Farm), or premixed pancakes that are low carb as well, though I can't testify to their flavor... They were too expensive for me to order them on a "maybe". https://raw-pasta.co.uk/cleanfoods/rawbakery/pancake

But yeah, just a bit of extract should be okay.

It says there is 10g of carbs per tablespoon. Which i thought was high. Theres another one that only 1g per tablespoon but its £5 more.

I'd guess the vanilla is only there for extra flavouring so could easily be missed out?

But usually when you use essence you don't have a tablespoon... Usually they require teaspoons, as it's strong stuff.... Right? (I could be waaaay off because i am useless in the kitchen).

I normally add a little more vanilla as im allergic to a lot of sweetners. Vanilla is my best bet to sweeten recipes.
You mean the sugar that comes with the vanilla essence?
Have you tried avoiding "sweet" completely.. after a week or so you likely won't miss it anyway.

Ah, yes, that would be problematic... I respond to the bulk of them rather badly too. (Though in moderation, an erythritol/stevia mix seems alright). I ended up just tryingt o get used to not having things as sweet as I used to like them... My palette has changed, so now i'm okay with tea without anything. Or if I have espresso, just putting cream in is sweet enough. (If I do it at all). Think you might be able to get used to going without sweeteners?

I don't sweeten everything. Its just i miss chocolate so much its the only thing i miss ( I've been keto 6months) I've tried different brands of dark choc but no matter how long i eat it i just cant get use to it. So that why i have my chocolate crossiant as it gets rid of my chocolate craving but it would be nice to have a chocolate breakfast once a week as a treat while still being keto.

The only sweetner that doesn't give me a bad reaction is stevia. This is the one my local supermarket has.

Ingredients
Bulking Agent: Erythritol, Sweetener: Steviol Glycosides, Natural Flavourings

Typical values
Per 100 g

Energy
0 kJ/kcal

Fat
0g

of which: Saturates
0g

Carbohydrates
99g

of which: Sugars
0g

of which: Polyols
99g

Protein
0g

Salt
0g

Does this look ok. The keto chocolate syrup recipe asks for 1\3 a cup of sweetner?

Do you think if i add the sweetner i could ignore the vanilla in the recipe?

Try it and see.

We are all so different in our reactions to foods and flavours, that what works for one of us doesn't work for others, and vice versa.

For me, in the teasp amounts of vanilla that I use, I don't worry about the carbs at all, and buy the best quality I can easily access. A 50ml bottle usually lasts me a couple of years.

So i shouldn't worry to much about the cheaper vanilla extracts that have more carbs?

Have you tried making chocolate mousse? Whip some cream (with or without a stevia/erythritol mix for sweetness), mix with melted extra dark chocolate, OR unsweetened cocoa powder, and you have an excellent, chocolaty dessert.
