hi this post is abit different my last posts were about blood glucose numbers but today I’ve been bombarded on my social media feeds saying keto is linked to high ldl which causes heart disease! I’m not 100 percent keto more low carb as I do eat lentils and beans but the rest is all keto really eggs every breakfast o eat full fat cheeses as I don’t need to lose anymore weight and full fat Greek yoghurt. I have dropped my hba1c eating this way but my total cholesterol and ldl shot up while my triglycerides dropped to very good levels and my hdl levels went up which is good but my doctor wasn’t happy with the ldl and told me I need statins especially as I am prone to diabetes having been prediabetic!!! So I’ve been continuing low carb as I can’t see how eating more carbs will benefit any of my problems!!!should I stop eating cheese or full fat yoghurt ??? I also put double cream in my coffee it’s about the only thing. I truly enjoy! I want to keep my hba1c in normal levels if at all possible but I’m now worried since this study is being posted everywhere and aimed at the keto and low carb groups!

Don’t panic. Start here https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/cholesterol-basics

Cholesterol is a hotly debated topic. LDL is typically seen as all bad but it’s made of different types (A and B, or small dense and large boyuant) and the larger version is protective. Keto usually makes us have a much higher % of the good even if the total amount of ldl (and thus total cholestero too) goes up. Very few drs measure this aspect.

Then there’s dispute about if cholesterol is the cause of harm as widely believed or in fact just a say of it trying fix the damage already done by inflammation etc.

Add in the fact that generally low cholesterol levels are found in heart attack victims as often as high ones and that slightly higher cholesterol levels may actually be protective, especially in post menopausal women.

Triglycerides are the best single predictor on their own and yours have dropped which is great news.

Everything is linked too heart disease and strokes, because of our health history of the western diet.
until you actually know which foods are unhealthy for you.

if I hadn't gone keto, that would have happened to me!
since keto, my health is so much better because I'm not eating those foods that were killing me. Wheat, porridge, spuds, bread, beer and so on.

I'm 68! Healthy food is down to the individual.
if I find you on social media, I will warn you of drinking water, or from eating veg and fruit. Never mind the meat, protein.

if you were told that you had a wheat allergy. Wouldn't you avoid it?
but if your mate told you that didn't mean things like cereal bars. Would you have one!
Dairy intolerance?
Nut allergy?
Couldn't eat hot spices?
Others that give you diahorea?
Others that makes you vomit?

It is so individual.
So you find out, what you can or can't eat!
Only you.
If that makes you healthy, great!
If not!........
Only you can work this out, not social media!

However, you may get heart disease or a stroke for no reason whatsoever!
But a better chance, by getting a healthy balanced dietary lifestyle designed by you for you.

Best wishes

What study, please? You've just said "social media feeds" which I put on a par for accuracy with what's written in bus shelters. You do know that "news" on social media is aimed at generating clicks - ie advertising revenue - so the more extreme they can make it the better? And social media uses algorithms to feed you more and more of the same things you've already looked at? So of course you will see it everywhere. I've not seen anything.

Please checkout the YouTube channel called Low Carb Down Under, it has a wealth of information on this and other low carb topics. Search Dr Paul Mason on that channel, he had some very interesting talks on this exact subject.

Pay no attention to these Keto has started to be targeted because it has picked up last few years and if every one was to switch to this it would change the food/pharm industry.

People have been mislead no science shows cholesterol causes heart disease it was a push to make $$$.

A few things no such thing as pre diabetes it's another made up term a person either has a raised blood sugar level or they do not it's that simple.

Next cholesterol is not a problem and is required for us to live which is why we produce over 70% of it.

(I eat carnivore diet and have done so for around 16 years, I did more inline with Keto for 10 before that)

The HDL/LDL numbers are made up people have been so mislead.

Your doctor has no idea what he is talking about he is going by guidelines set by who he works for and I expect he has never read a single study on the subject.

No study conducted on a human ever showed high cholesterol caused any disease and lots of research showing statins are toxic.

How long have you been doing the low carb diet?

Not a scientist, nor was doing keto, but low carb like 90/100gm a day diet a few years ago with high fat (whole eggs, cheese butter etc). When I did a test my cholestrol and triglycerides (which were always high) was below normal range and my hdl was high. Also my hba1c was 33. So atleast in my case, fats are good and carbs were the culprit.

The Cholesterol heart health hypothesis is defunct. Cholesterol is vital to life. That's why we produce for ourselves what we need. The more you eat, the less we produce. Our body sets the level needed as and when. There are very serious conditions where the regulation of this is out of whack. But thankfully they are very rare. By eating low carb, we suffer less oxidative stress, and therefore require less cholesterol to fix the problems caused by it. But don't worry your body knows how much it needs, and will compensate for the lower required level.

The low fat con has been running for about 50 years, look at what has happened to obesity and diabetes levels in that time. But also look at what has happened to the food industries profits.

The medication needed to sustain diabetics is massively profitable, most of which would disappear if we all ate real food and much lower level of carbs.

There are Billions of pounds on the line. In rubbishing anything that may affect those profits, industries are fighting to protect themselves. they couldn't care less about you, only your money. That's why you keep seeing all this bull....

Also as regards above, Weight Watchers and Slimming World, to name just 2 turned over 2 Billion pounds last year. That's under threat as well.

Weight watchers has teamed up with Big Pharma to prescribe Ozempic under the name of Wegovy for weight loss, thus depriving deserving diabetics of one of their medications. The WW route is not monitored or subject to the Yellow Card system of problem reporting so it is a licence to print money again.
