Kidney disease or kidney damage?

Hi all!

After a recent blood test I was told my kidneys GFR was only operating at 64? I am so down about this as I am only 29.

I feel like my life is slipping away slowly and there is nothing I can do about. Along with my chronic pancreatitis. I am devastated by this news.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you

Ryan

Hello Ryan,

I would have another blood test first, you can sometimes have an anomaly with the reading, once I ran 5kms before a blood test and was told after that I had staqe 4 CKD which threw me into a wild panic, the surgery advised a retest and it came back ok, I now do keep a close eye on it though as during pregnancy I had bad readings then too.

How is your t1d management ?

Hi thanks for the reply!

My previous test showed a GFR of 51, showing improvement this time round.

I’m only 29 years old and had diabetes for the last 4 years. How can I have so many issues?
Early death it is for me.

My time in range is 93% so I’d say I’m doing rather good

TIR is excellent Ryan - it was my thought process that if this wasn't hitting the NICE target then it would be room for improvement but as you're doing so well your giving yourself the best chance of a healthy outcome.

Probably easier said than done but it's mind over matter with these things, they do not define you so dust yourself down and don't beat yourself up, we are devils of our misfortune if we let it. The fact you have a marked improvement since your last reading shows it's going in the right direction, feel positive from this if you can.

Thank you!

I am trying my best and have been quite positive about my health for a couple of years now, I refuse to let it get me down for 99% of the time. It’s the 1% that kills me!

It was only a maybe about going medication, don’t know anyone of similar age and same health issues? Or even older for that matter.

Thanks

Not T1 but I’m T2, I had a kidney test in January that was in the 80s! Really shook me, I’ve always been on the slightly higher side and have mild leaky kidneys but very stable and of no concern, but it was massive rise compared to my previous. They redid the tests because as @Juicyj says there can be other reasons for it. I’d also been unwell for a few months with another condition and all my yearly tests were the worst they’d been since diagnosis 14 years ago The next test 2 weeks later came back as in the region, (in fact slightly better) than all my other tests before, so yes get another test :)

All my other tests have dropped back to where I usually sit too so it was obviously fir me personally other things that were going on with my body and not necessarily my diabetes, though it took a bashing :)

I’m very much hoping my next test results will be even better to be honest. The mind has taken a battering these last 4 years with all health issues considered.

I’m hopeful that being so young will be an advantage but I can’t see much hope

  • Comments:No lower limit, upper limit = 90.
    (90 or more) = normal
(60 to 89) = mild reduction related to normal range for a young adult
(45 to 59) = mild to moderate reduction
(30 to 44) = moderate to severe reduction
    (15 to 29) = severe reduction
    (under 15) = kidney failure
These result ranges should not be used for clinical care decisions.
Your laboratory may report in different units, or the analysis method may have changed so please check with your kidney centre if your result is outside this range.
This test is not applicable for dialysis patients.
im on dialysis so my kidney is at 8 % I get monthly blood done here is an attachment I had with my last eGFR Test I know my kidney function was at 30 % for 10 years and I felt no different only when I went below 10 % did I feel any real effects

Hi @Rleady1357 Just to give you some positivity. I first started passing protein in urine in 1973. I have no idea what the gfr result would have been - I was 15 and nobody mentioned the term. In those days tight control was very difficult since blood testing kits and even more progressive technology didn't exist. By 1979 I had reached the 2nd stage in which 64 sits. I never improved my result, but due to much tighter control, my kidneys served me till 2013. What I am suggesting is that your improved reading and your careful control will give you a much better chance. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Ryan, I was diagnosed T2D in 1999 and followed my endos standard therapy which just made my diabetes worse. I adopted a low carbe keto diet in 2018 and my health became incredibly better quite quickly! Prior to Keto my eGFR went as low as 54, now on Keto Carnivore it has peaked as high as 90! I also have to take insulin, due to pancreas burn out. But I only take 23 units a day, prior to Keto Carnivore I needed 240 units a day, and my weight gain was +100lbs. Now have lost that weight. I’m 77. And don’t think red meat and healthy fats will harm your kidneys, ignore the myth that excess protein from red meat is bad for kidney health, that’s been proven a false narrative. Look up Dr Ken Berry! Just stop the carbs, go zero carbs!
I wish you well with your health journey.
You must manage your own health, so research and get as much knowledge as you can go achieve that goal.
