Lactose Free Milk

I have been waging war on my weigh for sometime and finding this site and learning about the evils of carbs, has resulted in some remarkable results for me. So would just like to thank all those that gave advice on lowering my carb in take.

My weight is coming down steadily, my BS is well within acceptable levels and may now result in cutting back on meds at my next diabetic clinic. The low carb diet has helped my training no end, no more false hypos, no problems with acid reflux and even though my sugars are well be low 7 prior to training my energy levels and performance in the gym is just amazing. It does seem crazy that eating less of what the medics tell you to eat is actually curing all the things they were hammering me over. The best bit is that it's actually been easy, by reducing carbs, not eating porridge, and bread checking what makes my sugars peak and avoiding them has made such a difference.

Sorry for the long winded start to my question but just wanted to show my gratitude to the contributors on site.

Anyway my question, in fine tuning my diet which does rely heavily on milk is it worth using Lactose free milk or doesn't Lactose have any real impact on BS. My testing so far hasn't shown much difference between normal milk and Lactose free.

In ditching porridge I have found that Shredded wheat and something I found being sold off cheap at Tescos Lizi's Original Granola have little impact on my BS average result after 2 hours is around 6. With this good start to my day which was always my problem period I am now able to maintain my BS around the 6 level constantly, with lows of around 5 and highs at most 7. Its been a remarkable change around for me.

So for once in a very long time I'm actually looking forward to my clinic in March.

Hi barry.
Lactose is the form of sugar present in milk. The enzyme lactase, which is normally produced by cells lining the small intestine, breaks down lactose into substances that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. When dairy products are ingested, the lactose reaches the digestive system and is broken down by lactase into the simpler sugars glucose and galactose. The liver changes the galactose into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream and raises the blood glucose level. This is usually when people find they are Lactose intolerant which occurs when, due to a deficiency of lactase, lactose is not completely broken down and the glucose level does not rise. While not usually dangerous, lactose intolerance can cause severe discomfort.

The real answer to your question is to try it and test, only then will YOU know just what it does to your Bg readings. Looks like the testing so far shows it doesn't make much difference to you.

I use Lactofree. Not because of an intolerance, but because it is lower in carbs than other cows milk.

It's not entirely lactose free however and is roughly 2gms carb per 100 mils as opposed to almost 5gms in ordinary milk.
An added bonus is that it lasts WEEKS in the fridge. Very handy if, like me, it's used for little more than a splash in tea.
In the summer, I make an occasional quick breakfast drink of half cream, half milk with some sort of sugar free syrup.

Thanks for that I had noticed it was lower in Carbs and in using it does seem to have a 1/2 to 1 point difference in my BS, so worth the effort and a little more cost.

Milk is a large part of my diet as I do a lot of training in the gym and need the protein, so after a month or so of experimenting its good to find something that I can add to my diet as opposed to removing.

Also like your idea of a sweet drink having a sweet tooth its been a real struggle to avoid the naughty stuff so any good ideas like yours are always very welcome.
