Hiya I have gd and have to inject Levemir in the evenings my diabetes nurse told me to inject into my thigh or bottom, everytime I inject it realy hurts and was wondering can you inject anywhere else as my daytime injections into my side don't Hurt. Thank you for taking the time to read this x

I use stomach thigh and bottom, only hurts if I hit a vein. But then I'm on a very low dose. What size needles are you using?

Hi,
Tummy, Thighs, Bottom and Arms. If u use a fresh needle as often as possible u're less likely to feel anything!! I tend to avoid my thighs to be honest. I find it a little sore at times, but I reckon that'll b down to not using them often!!

I was diagnosed 6 weeks ago, I was told they no longer recommend using arms.

I use a 4mm needle for my thighs as that is less painful for me. But I use 5mm for my stomach or bottom
 
I am wondering if perhaps I ask for a smaller needle it might be less painful :-/ also slightly off topic but what are the chances of diabetes staying once baby is here?? I'm realy worried as never expected to have to take Insulin as I heard gd was easily controlled by diet. I am very new to this and don't realy understand. X

Make sure you pinch the skin and hold it as you inject. For me it makes things far less painful

If you're towards the slim side a smiler needle will definitely help no have some padding on my tummy but not my thighs, hence the smaller needle. 1mm makes all the difference!

I'm afraid I get help with the baby question though. I'm a new Type 1!
 

They told me to pinch an inch which I can do on the side of my tummy but not my thighs, I think you may have hit the nail on the head with using a smaller needle for the thigh tho thank you so much for your help x

Hi I'm also on once a day Levemir. I'm quite slim so was given 4mm needles and recommended by my excellent nurse to inject into the stomach. I have minimal pain and only occasionally then. If you don't have too much fat you might want to ask for 4mm needles and try the stomach either side of and slightly below the navel as my DSN suggested.

Hi, I had gestational diabetes in 1991 with my first child. I was told that I probably wouldnt have diabetes till I was much older. Unfortunately i was diagnosed type 2 in 1997. I don't know about anyone else.

I use thighs and buttocks for basal and stomach and arms for bolus doses, I find the buttocks the least painful for my lantus although injecting in this area does take some getting use to.

I've never been told this hale710, I use the arms quite a bit and the Consultant and DSN often check my injection sites when attending the clinic but have never mentioned anything, did they give a reason why?

Not a clue. They just said "inject in stomach bottom or thighs, we don't use arm anymore". At the time I thought it was weird because I hadn't said anything about arms!

My nurse said arms are OK too ! Anywhere fatty really. Don't you just love it when we all get told different things lol !

My doctors seem very keen on using arms. I was taught to use that for my rapid and my stomach for my long term. It wasn't until I read online that I found other sites and opinions. My doctor recently asked me if I had thought of using my arms for my pump (I haven't, I think I'd pull on the tubing every time I lifted my arms.)
I was never told to pinch up either, but I also used smaller needles from the start.

I inject basal in thighs and bolus in tummy. Years ago I used my arms (was much plumper then now it is very sore as not a lot of fat there. One dr told me not to use arms and another basically said he didn't care what site I used as long as I kept taking injections and to do what suited me. I find injecting in thigh uncomfortable but not painful and tummy is effortless

Well I'm 5'3" and only weigh just over 8 stone ( it's seems with carb counted Ive avoided the dreaded weight gain!) could that be why? My arms are lacking in the "padding" required?

Either way, I have 3 sites I'm comfortable using and since I changed to the 4mm on the thigh I'm happy with it!

I think I read recently that using the arms can be a problem if you are thin as you risk hitting muscle? I've also read on the web that the stomach achieves the quickest insulin response and then thighs and buttocks? If that's true then the stomach should be reserved for bolus?
