liver scan

To day had a liver scan and told that my liver is working very hard and that I had a fatty liver and this was normal in type 2 diabetics. but I did not fall in to the typical type 2 diabetic remit, iam not fat or obese. (I saw red) and told her that not all of us type 2 are fat or obese some of us inherit this as in my case. when are the NHS going to lose this that all type 2's sit around eating junk all day and are fat lazy and obese????.

Speaking as an obese T2, I'd just like to add that not all of us eat junk and sit around all day. I have a fatty liver just like you, but insulin resistance has caused me to become fat. I think the worst stereotyping of all is that it is assumed that a fat person caused their diabetes whilst a slim one was unlucky to develop it. I view it the other way round - the slim person is lucky not to have had to carry round several excess stones for years with the stigma that is attached to it, whilst the obese one is unlucky that they have been robbed of their energy, vitality and dignity by prediabetes.

For me it was the weight that caused me to slow down, not laziness that caused me to get fat. I am still around 5+ stones overweight and walked 14 miles along the Thames path in the Summer. Some of my slim friends say they wouldn't even have attempted it.

On the subject of fatty liver, reduce your carbs and it will improve. If only I had been told that 25 years ago, I would have willingly done it. If you start to lose too much weight you can add a little extra protein and then as much more fat as you need to keep your weight stable.

Hi Phil,
I have a high GGT and hoping (and trying) low carbs reduce the problem when I burn fat not glucose.
This is worse for those us have reactive hypoglycemia. I hope you are OK in this regard.
Nosher will help you if you have this condition.
Meanwhile read southportgp stuff on this site.
regards
Derek

I am sorry if I offended you in any way. I don't understand how anyone can judge any one for the way they are be it fat, obese etc as many have heath probs, not that they sit around stuffing the face with junk. they should get to know the person and there probs . before judging them. not all fat or obese people are diabetic and not all type 2's are fat and obese. it makes me mad being judged. its not your falt you are the way you are, you have a condition so why judge you???. they need to drop this thing with type 2's all being fat laze people that sit around all day in front of t.v and treat us for what and ooh we are.
sorry if I have upset you I did not mean to. good luck with your probs all the best.

Hi Phil,
Please read the Southport GP thread on NAFL.
It is something that the wife has and I did have!
When I was misdiagnosed as T2, I had to have quite a few times liver scans and was accused of drinking too much. I never did, the wife gets the same, she hasn't had alcohol for over twenty years!
A low carb lifestyle changed this and my last liver scan was good, the attendant (scanner) was impressed and couldn't believe the good result.
All my life signs and liver and kidney function tests were getting worse, now healthy, it can be done, low carb works!

You didn't offend me at all. :) Like you, it's the judging by HCPs that really gets me down. They jump to conclusions without listening or thinking and it's so very upsetting. I have seen the looks when a nurse saw my shopping trolley and the fresh cream cakes and chocolate that I was buying......for my Mum and Dad who had been ill and fancied a treat.
