Longest lasting hypoglycemia.

I just came out of a hypoglicemia that lasted for over an hour that I just couldn't get out of. I ate and ate and my blood sugars only rose slightly. What's your longest lasting hypoglicemia?

For me it's usually very fast - once I take honey or a fruit juice 10 - 15 minutes - but what constitutes a hypo? Lots of times I'll hit 2.8 or 3.0 with no difficulty - it'as usually from 2.4 - 1.8 that things aren't well - I say 1.8 because that's the lowest I've been and I really had to focus to remain conscious. That particular time I drank juice and it was about 15 minutes before I popped back in to the 4s.

The longest lasting hypo? It's got to be the one that kills... ;)

Thats happened to me too, took like 50 minutes for it to come up Then you check later on, and your blood sugars have rocketed up!

Think this is due to what you used to treat your hypo with.

If you ate chocolate then your BG will rise but slowly and you then think that you haven't had enough so eat more hence the very high BG later on. This can be made worse by correcting with insulin with the added possibility of a further low or hypo.

Its best to treat your hypo with a soluble treatment such as a sweet drink, much quicker and you should see a safe rise in 15 minutes upon which you should decide as to whether you need some slow acting carbs to maintain your BG.

@fletchweb Anything under 4 is hypo. Not feeling it doesn't make it not a hypo. If you aren't experiencing symptoms at 2.8, that suggests hypo unawareness. You really should experience symptoms under 4 - those symptoms are your body going "o my goodness he's low, gotta get him out of the low" and if you do pass out it will be your body going "o my goodness" that will bring you round, but if you have taught your body not to panic and not give you symptoms at 2.8, then your body's response to a hypo will be slower and less effective. Have a chat with your DSN about hypo awareness if you are concerned you aren't getting symptoms of hypos - it's one of the things they should really check on in your annual review.

@Timmy98 i think my longest hypo was about 12 hours, but I was unconcious for pretty much all of that. Went to bed about 11, CGM showed my levels drop, go straight line down, at about 11:30/midnight. The CGM would have alarmed, but I must've been unconcious when it started alarming. I got woken up sometime after 11 the next morning by a paramedic starting the second dextrose drip on me. I don't have a exact time because it took me quite a while to figure out where I was, what my name was and how to move. Awful, I don't recommend it.

The longest time I've actually been hypo was probably 2 to 3 hrs. Long story but in short I fell asleep, being extremely tired just after midday and was treated by paramedics by 1530 ish. It took them quite awhile to bring me round and i also needed Oxygen. That was my worst ever and a confused nightmare it was too. My scotch eggs that i had in the oven didn't make it though.

The following day i felt completely drained and was glad that i listened to my wife and pre arranged the day off work.

My hypos always take 30mins to come up. I used to follow the guidelines of 15g check again in 15mins but I was always lower then treated again the bam high teens! Now I take 20g and wait 30mins and I'm sure to have risen. Not sure how normal this is? I treat with jelly babies or orange juice

I couldn't treat my hypo's with jelly babies, as i would eat the whole bag, normally by decapitation with ones front teeth, then i get really excited and just pile them in lol.

It really does boil down to how you treat your hypos, fast acting glucose like fruit juice, jelly babies, glucogel can get you back up in around 10-15 minutes, if you're loading anything you can find in the kitchen into your system then they may not come up so quick. Test every 10 minutes if you're not coming up then repeat with fast acting glucose, once you start coming up then eat 10g of carb so a digestive biscuit or bag of crisps, i'd rather come up to say 10 mmol/l after a hypo to avoid a repeat, then correct.

I always say this with hypos - you need to know why you went low, it's an education to help you develop your knowledge so you don't repeat the episode. I develop a sixth sense with hypo's so I know when the alarm bells start ringing, like tonight at my daughter's carol service I ate pizza before I went just 2 small slices, took carbs but was rushing around and I knew I was going low as this was an unusual event so caught it before I went low - thank goodness, but it's always good to know what your triggers are.

I treat mine with 5-6 gluco tabs which js 20-24g. I then have to wait 20 minutes to check as it would normally go up!

two hours to feel i have no symptoms.
