Hi everyone,

I try not to eat everything but I just can't help myself.....anyway it's Friday, the weekend is nearly here so that is one positive ;-)

I have tried cutting out carbs, I went very low and was limiting myself to 10-15g a day. I stuck at this for 4 weeks but it was getting very boring and my meals were very limited. I came flying off the low carb wagon and now I trying to count my carbs and match my insulin to my carbs. I love carbs but just cutting them out for a few weeks made me realise the impact they have on our levels. I did see that my sugars were really good and low during that time. I am up and down like a yo-yo with my sugars but. Have never had good control. I have recently moved to a different area and the health team at this hospital are the same as the last, I feel like they just don't care and see me as a waste of space. I have invested in carbs & cals book which is very good and I am in the middle of reading "think like a pancreas" I am determined to take control and to get better readings and results as I worry constantly about the future.

Have a fab day people :-) xxx

A Simple hi can make you smile :-)

Hi Scarlett how much insulin did you need when you were down to 10g of carb a day? I'm trying the same thing as desperate to get my sugars down!!! I'm 31 btw have been T1 for 8 years.

Hi mon,

Really I was having one unit for breakfast, one for dinner, maybe 2 for tea and then my night time dose which I reduced depending on my readings. I hardly needed any insulin and was having very low readings but as I say I was practically carb free. It's amazing the impact carbs have on your sugar, I am gutted I couldn't stick to it but I am determined to try low carbs again but just not that radical. Xxx

HI Scarlet/Monika,
As mentioned I low carb. For me going weeks without a high or low makes it worth it. My HbA1c before LCing was 7.7% (frequent highs and hypos), then with low carbing it was 6.5% and now it's 6.1%.

The think that makes LCing work is that you need smaller amounts of insulin. Smaller amounts of insulin means that you will make smaller mistakes in calculating your dose. So you will have smaller highs and less severe hypos. They will also be less frequent. This is because when you inject insulin there's a 30% variation in the amount of insulin that is absorbed into the blood stream. So if you are out by 30% on a meal that needs 10 units, then you're going to go high, but if you are out by 30% on a 3 unit meal then you probably won't go high. Likewise, if you overestimate on a meal that you think needs 10 units, but needs 7, then you'll end up hypo. But if you overestimate on a meal that you think needs 3 units, but needs 2, then you probably won't go hypo (or it will be more mild than overestimating by 3 units).

LCing can be a pain, so if you feel you can't stick to it then just think about reducing the amount of carbs you eat. This will have the same effect.

Hi guys!

I'm Kim, 23 (for a bit longer anyway!) a s been T1 just 6 months. Last hba1c (1 month post diagnosis) was 8.7%. Got the clinic on Friday so I'm hoping for a big improvement!

This forum has been awesome at holding my hand through the early stages, I can't believe all of you went through it without this support!

I've considered LCing, I currently believe I couldn't sustain it forever (pass the potatoes!). I'm waiting for my hba1c on Friday and will see if I need more effort in which case I might try it! I eat about 100-150g carb per day currently so not exactly mega high or low. Interested in how things have progressed :)

Hi samJB
Thanks for your post it totally makes sense to me. Just wondering whether you skip taking QA insulin completely ever? On the dafne course we were told to count carbs in 1:1 ratio so one unit for 10g of carbs. If its less than 10g don't count it. So would you take nothing if you just ate salad steak & veg for dinner for example? Or 1 or 2 just to be sure?

Hi Monika,
When you eat, your large intestine stretches as the food enters. This triggers glucogen production in anticipation of the meal that you are eating, so that you get an immediate benefit of the food you are eating. So your sugar levels rise if you eat a substantial amount of anything, even if there tiny amounts of carbs in the food.

Before when I carb counted, I just injected according to how many carbs I ate. Now I look at the size of my portion and judge how much insulin I will need, based on experience. Because it will be a small amount of insulin, usually 2-3 units, any mistake in judgement wont make me go really high or low (see my earlier post).

Have a google for "Richard Bernstein Chinese Restaurant Effect". This is the effect I'm describing.

Ref coubting veg or salad as carbs... It feally would be worth getting a pair of battery scales that works out the carbs for you.... Ie carrots.. Enter code 31 and it displays the carbs for the carrots you have put on the scale.. Same for onions... Code 72.. Etc.

It is amazing the amount of carbs that ate actually in a salad.. My salad consisted of onion, cucumber, tomatos, walnuts, apple, pepper, lettuce. My carb count for this would average somewhere betwwen 27-37 carbs.. So I have always bolused... My veg is high too as I have say for tonight had 2xcorn on cobs, carrots, swede, broccoli, asaparagus and leeks with butter and gravy... My carbs totalled 49 tonight. My whole meal was just veg..and later I will have fruit...

So it is well worth weighing your veg/salad.....
