Hi all, got diagnosed with LADA at the beginning of September. Since then I've dropped quite a bit of weight and lost 6 inches off my waist. Just wondering if this is normal after changing diet etc. The only exercise I do is walking now again but the weight seems to be falling off me. Was quite overweight at diagnosis too

Hi Kalamazoo I assume your change in diet has greatly reduced the amount of sugar you eat in drinks food etc... When you deprive your body of sugar it breaks down body fat, it's not unusual to drop weight rapidly with out much if any exercise.

That's how our bodies are supposed to work store fat until its needed. It is amazing the effect of eating the right food for you can have on your health and well being. ;)

Hi @Kalamazoo_79 a lot of type 1's/LADA actually gain weight when they first go on insulin . That you start losing weight is one of the symptoms a lot of type 1's have because they can't use the carbs/food they are actually eating so it is going through them not utilized. A type 1 might actually be eating a lot more than they need and still be hungry because of that. Once you start on insulin then all of a sudden you are using the food you eat and then a lot of new diagnosed type 1's are probably eating too much for what they actually need.

It still boils down to eating what you body actually needs and dosing appropriately. So if you are losing weight either you aren't eating enough for what your body needs, or you might not be getting enough insulin to actually use the food you are eating.

But it's best to talk to your doctor about it because thyroid issues can be common with type 1's or there can be other problems that cause weight loss too.

As a generalisation when LADA and losing weight, increasing fats and proteins is a good start and increasing the carbs but not enough to have unwanted weight and BS gain.

I am theoretically T2 BUT I’ve been insulin dependant for 20 years and have throughout had problems with control. Recently I stopped secretly snacking (not much but it was significant), and started to lose weight due to reducing my insulin from c. 40+ IU/day. In 2 months I have lost 5kg and feel much better but my control has gone haywire. My Diabetic specialist nurse now thinks that I was T1 all along (I had never been tested for such) and they are now going at last to do a C-peptide test to confirm it.

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood.
To clarify a bit further, it's the same as T1 but comes on outside of childhood. Although strictly speaking it refers to auto-immune destruction of the beta cells, there are other causes of beta cell loss such as viruses

@ianslaney 40% of type 1/LADA’s are misdiagnosed as type 2’s at first. At least they are finally paying attention, but it is still happening too often. One of the signs of being type 1 is needing insulin within 3 years of diagnosis.

Hi, I am a Man 75 years old, weight about 102 kg, 1.83 mtr and heavy build.

For 5 years ago, my weight was about 123kg. I had 159mg in the morning before breakfast. The doctor told me to go using tablets, because I was about getting diabetics 2.
I refused because wanted to try to loose weight first.
I succeeded 10kg and then with a weight round 101kg my level was about 125mg, so it happely worked.

Now 5 years later (75 years old), I have still about the same 102kg but before breakfast I have 155mg.
It is hard to manage, with walking, less eating, to get the same result of 125mg as I had 5 years ago.

Question:
Is it correct, by going older 5 years now, that you have to loose more weight then before, for getting back the same value of 125mg??

Would it be better now, on my age, to use tablets?

Thanks for your responding.
John

@johndegr24 Losing weight helps some people, but not everyone. So it's really hard for anyone to answer that. It continues to help my husband but he still has weight he needs to lose.

The thing I want you to keep in mind is sometimes when things don't make sense you could be a type 1 instead of a type 2. LADA/Type 1's is slow onset and you have what we call a honeymoon period where you still make some insulin that gradually tapers off until you don't anymore. Medications, weight toss etc will work at the beginning. It can take years to develop, I went misdiagnosed for 8 years and 40% of type 1's are misdiagnosed at first. I'm not saying you are, I'm just saying keep an eye out.

@Little Bird LADA is a form type 1 diabetes, but the same thing, it is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults. It's just as an adult it is a slow developing form. Often misdiagnosed as type 2 at first. Medications, diet etc can work at first because you still make some insulin for a while even 8 years plus. That is called the honeymoon period because you do still make some insulin, but at some point you have to have insulin to survive. 40% of type 1's are misdiagnosed as type 2's at first. It still is a prevalent mistake made unfortunately.

Thank you for answering that. A misdiagnosis must make it an even more bitter pill to swallow.
