Has anyone seen an increase in their cholesterol levels by eating low carb high fat?
I've attended the DESMOND course today and found it really interesting.

I have leant that we T2's are all doomed and will be on medication for the rest of our life. ( I don't think so !)

Cholesterol is a very interesting subject. There are a very large number of threads on the forum about cholesterol, statins and whether we should care about it.
My total cholesterol has gone up slightly while following a ketogenic diet but I really don't care. From my reading there is no real link between cholesterol levels and Cardio Vascular Disease apart from some rather flawed studies. Current thinking is that higher cholesterol could in fact be beneficial to longer life especially as we age and especially in women (doesn't quite work for me but hey..). So your cholesterol may go up for some it comes down .. more important is should you care?
Good to hear you have a note of scepticism re the Desmond.. did you learn anythhng useful or was it all "you need carbs with every meal" and "you're all doomed"?

I have seen a little raise but not much, what worries me mostly is that my HDL has lowered..

My numbers all moved in the right direction, based on 60% fat, 10-15% carbs , 20-25% protein and 5% whisky .Most of my fats comes from butter, cream or red meats.

Ssaturated fats specifically raise HDL - I made the switch to increasing saturated fats after the first period using mainly olive oil improved some markers but not HDL .

My cholesterol overall level has gone up from 4.3 to 7.1 in three years, with high HDL and non-HDL. I have been eating lchf for two years and gave up statins some time ago. If there is a correlation between high cholesterol levels and lchf, it is not supported by the majority of people on here as far as I can gather. There are many accounts of cholesterol and blood pressure returning to normal when blood glucose levels are reduced by means of this diet. Like @bulkbiker I feel everyone has their own level and low isn't necessarily best.
My latest blood test results are due on Tuesday so I might be back here retracting everything o_O

I've gone from 5s to 8s with LCHF, not really bothered as I'm more concerned with my BGs.
My BPs have gone from 130/90 to 105/65, which I'm okay with.

My total cholesterol went down when I restarted Atkins. I put the various amounts into a lipid assessor and found that the ratios were rated good or ideal - though some readings are abnormal - but I was only 80 days into the regime at the time of my second test.

Yes you need carbs with eat meal, it's also ok to eat chocolate, in moderation of course. I understood the mechanism of the low carbs, but the rest of the group left thinking everything is ok and the just need to cut their food in take.

Not all a waste of time. There was some interesting stuff. I feel sorry that the 12 of us who were they will not have the opportunity to speak again.
It's good to talk to others

But you do realise that you don't need carbs at all don't you? And as for chocolate best to try and check with your meter to see what effect it has.

I disagreed with a lot of what they said.

Hi YES my cholesterol levels went through the roof on the low carb, high fat diet. I was worried since is only tested 6 monthly and am concerned about the damage I may have caused. Trying to get it down by cutting out fats as far as possible. If you go on that diet I urge you to get regular cholesterol checks.
