Early days I know but I've had really bad control throughout my life(diagnosed at 12, 28 now). Easily going into the 20+ range and eating everything from Doritos, drinking 1 litre of coke a day, eating chocolate and injecting dangerous amounts of insulin because I felt high. Wouldn't take my lantus, would inject my lantus if I ran out of humalog, never testing my bloods and literally was depressed and lost.
Covid actually saved my life. I lost my job as a barista(really decent one infact) and had to move out of my flat to live with my mum due to not having efficient funds to pay for rent. I can honestly say I'm surprised I lived for this long. Use to drink until I couldn't walk, eat whatever I wanted and since my body was so use to high blood glucose levels I never was sick even with 20+ readings and never tested for ketones.
If I could go back 10 years I would shake myself and educate myself on how important diabetes management is. I use to even say hi to my glucose monitor because it said hi back to me(reading was obviously above 25).
Glad to say that my mum gave me the boot I needed and got me back into a gp and a diabetic nurse. HbAc1 levels were 94 back in 2007. Found out I had dangerous levels of blood pressure(190/140) and also my eyes developed bad diabetic retinopathy.
Moving onto the past months, my blood pressure is 130/86. I'm on 10mg of ramipril and 10mg of Amodopiline. Also taking 1 tablet to lower cholesterol and another to increase blood flow. Had 3 sessions of laser treatment and doctors said It's improved. Never got over a 15 reading for 3 weeks now and finally stopped getting hypo symptoms when my bloods are sitting at 6(hypo feelings start at 4.8 for me now). Picked up the carb and cals book and got myself with a dietican who taught me how to carb count. Even though the first night I nearly died because she said start on 3 units per 10g of carbs and ended up fighting a hypo for 50 minutes. Could of started me on 1:10 ratio and work from there but eh... it's fine now, Worked it out myself.
I never miss injections, quit smoking, haven't touched alcohol since July and that was just a summer cider(before that it was early febuary). I never eat crisps, chocolate or any junk food. Cut sugar out of my diet including sugar in my coffee. Only have wholemeal grains and bread and started to drink more water and eat more greens. I've gone from 12 stone to nearly 11 in the past month even know I'm not active but one day at a time right?.
And now I'm just fine tuning my ratios. 2:10 breakfast, 1.50 lunch and 1:10(+1 unit if bloods are 8). Lantus sits at 22 units because I started to get bad hypos at 23+. Had my feet checked and all is well, no signs of damage.
Gonna start on small walks soon to help loose a tad bit more weight.
I am so thankful for my mum, my diabetes team and also the diabetic forums. Without looking through here and seeing advice and feedback, I honestly felt alone before.
H1bca was 64 in August and I'm due to in November.
Have a great week everyone =).
