Hi
Last week my slow acting insulin was 45 units once a day. I started experiencing hypos after I lost a bit of weight so was told to decrease background as even without fast acting insulin I'd hypo after meals.

I'm currently on 34 units
This morning I had coffee with sugar and muffin. My blood sugar was 8.9 gave no insulin 3 hours later I was hypoing 3.8
Really struggling as it's been a week and all I keep getting told is to decrease. Other day I went from 11.9 to 2.8 in one hour while I was driving which really stressed me out!

Has anyone experienced this??

Ribiero - Could you confirm which type of diabetes you have, and how long you have been diagnosed? I appreciate that's probably rather irritating, but it could significantly impact of the quality of the responses you receive.

Thanks Ribeiro - Could you possibly update your profile please, or you'll soon be bored of everyone asking the same questions.

You can update your profule, from hovering on your user name, in the top right hand side of your browser window. It's not really doable in the app, if you are using that.

Going back to your main query; has anything else changes? Have you started moving around a lot more, or started/stopped any meds? Are you well in yourself?

You can tell I "do" questions. :)

I'm in the app so will try on the website.
No apart from loosing weight not much has changed.. I've been trying to eat better which isn't happening as I'm having to them eat to drive or avoid hypos. Just feeling frustrated. The weather has been warmer which for the first time is really getting to me I'll be feeling all hot when no one else is and stuff. I'm 26 and the last time I experienced anything similar I was pregnant which I'm not now x

After 5 years I guess you're aware that warmer weather can affect insulin absorption?

I am wondering several things.
When you dropped from 11.9 to 2.8 did you actually feel hypo' , are these readings actual blood tests or from a sensor (Libre or similar).

Are you using a glargine based basal insulin by any chance?

Yeah I usually have to watch my sugars more in the summer but never in this sort of weather about 17 degrees.

I'm on levemir as my background.

I did feel hypo but not 2.8 usually by this number I can't hold anything and still managed to get us home. I retested at home with an old meter which was the same. I'm using a normal meter. They are giving me the libre this week though x

Well that's all my best ideas in the bin. Maybe losing weight has had a significant effect on any insulin resistance? I am sorry if it's a bit personal (you don't have to answer if you don't want to) but how much weight have you lost?

Since January I've lost 22lbs but the last two weeks I've lost 7lbs which is when it all started happening.

Just always scared I'm going to hypo at night if I'm not already. Went to bed at 6.7 yesterday woke up at 2am with a massive headache and needing water checked 12.9 went back to sleep and woke up at 6.0 without correction

That's a fairly rapid drop. Are you in control of the weight loss? On a diet? Changing the type of food you're eating?

Probably not in control as I wasn't expecting to loose that much. But I'm watching what I'm eating and probably making healthier choices. I just don't get them ATM..

I just want to say congratulations on your weight loss! I have realised that the more weight I have gained, the more insulin resistant I have become! I was on 22 units of lantus and carb counting with apidra as well as 2 metaformin tablets a day but am now on the Omnipod pump which is great.
I am no expert, but was going to ask if you are able to split your background insulin in two so you are having half first half of day and other half second half of the day? Also, it seems you need to reduce your background insulin further due to your weight loss. Your diabetes team should be able to help with this. Also, I have heard caffeine causes sugars to drop, therefore the coffee may have contributed to this. Maybe you need to be eating more and having a little less basal xx

I agree with the others and think that your weight loss is probably the issue. In your position I'd probably just keep reducing the basal until things improve - weight loss really does make a massive difference to insulin needs.

And yes, I too hate having to eat for hypos, particularly frustrating when you're trying to go low carb and/or lose weight.

Good luck.
