My brother reading this morning was 4.6 we know this way too low he has eaten a banana had a few jelly babies now having toast and marmalade how long will we leave before retesting please help don't want to phone Dr just now

@Kirsteen27 Unless your brother has additional problems, 4.6 is an ok level and many people without diabetes would have that level.

If you feel, or have been told, that he needs to treat that level, then fast acting sugar is better than a banana in future. So give jelly babies, Lucozade or glucose tablets first. His levels should come up in approx 15 mins so retest then.

I'd also retest frequently this morning just to make sure he's ok. How old is he?

4.6 is ok and you don't need the doctor, especially if he's eaten all that. It should be rising within 10 minutes, then just monitor it. I agree with the other reply, go for faster sugar when it's low, bananas and toast are too slow. Lucozade or orange juice is good. They do recommend jelly babies.

4.6 is a normal blood sugar so no need to treat at all. The amount of carbs eaten would give him enough fuel to orbit the earth

I'd be happy with a 4.6 mmol and not take any corrective action. In fact I was 4.2 mmol before lunch and quite happy with that :-). Is your brother running his BS high to regain hypo awareness or did he have hypo symptoms @ 4.6 mmol?

Hi. Yes, I go down to just above 4 quite often and may feel slightly spaced out but safe. You need to be more careful below 4. I find a couple of glucose tablets brings me up enough if a bit low.

Kirsteen, are you T1 yourself and is your brother T1 also? Guidance can be a bit different for T2.

Hi Kirsteen, you need to go to your profile page and change the information you have provided which states you are type 1. :)

See in one of your previous posts that your brother is a type 2 on insulin, if the 4.6 reading was a postprandial reading soon after injecting then he would need to act and eat something carby, however if its a fasting reading then there's no need to treat and certainly no need to phone a Dr, maybe provide a little more information @Kirsteen27 about your brothers insulin regime.

Hello Kirsteen I'm 66 and T2 yesterday my FBG (fasting blood glucose) was 3.6 a sugary drink had brought it back up when I tested later so don't worry too much. :)

This thread is nearly for years old the op has not posted anything since 2016 so don't necessarily expect a response from them.
