Low Carb Diet And Medical Professionals

After years of the good old paradigm of "Low Fat and Low Calorie Diet is best" I have finally met a Specialist (endo-crinologist) who advocates Low Carb Diet as the best way to control Type 2 Diabetes and promote weight loss. All the Dieticians, GP's, Educators that I have seen all these years (even Diabetes Australia) have been pushing the Low Fat Low Cal regime. Proteins and fats have little to no effect on BSL's while carbohydrates does. Too many people have been brainwashed with the traditional ways and consider Atkins and Dukan as the tools of the devil! Your thoughts, please.

If it wasn't for my endocrinologist giving me the basic information of how carbs were killing me, I believe that I wouldn't be here now. He did literally save my life.
He does still say a few grams are essential, but, after trial and error, I have convinced him that very low carb is essential for my future health.

There was my first specialist who didn't have a clue, many, many. GPs, dsns ans so called dieticians and of course nurses, hospital doctors and people including family who still are not convinced that you can live without having carbs.

We have been blinded on education of our health by big business, government and self interested farming communities especially in the States!

I have started telling people i am T2 Diabetic, and several have replied that they are too, unknown to me prior to this, and I have eaten out with some of them and they didn't hold back on food ! All of them are eating lots of fruit and quite a bit of carbs, on the advice of their dietician / nutritionist, they have all had a review appointment sometime within the last year.
They all tell me they are overweight and not feeling great, one is being told she may have to switch to insulin because levels are going up, so I told them about the latest opinion about LCHF. fingers crossed for my continued success to help them see it really works

I know a couple of other type 1s who also keep to a low carb ideal, but test to see if they need to alter their insulin after everything they eat. One lady has lost a lot of weight, the other one not so much - but she does snack a lot on fruit and also seems addicted to milky drinks. The dietitian at our Gps is also a LCHF fan, but remains suspicious of fats and continues to advise skimmed milk and doesn't seem prepared to consider my suggestions that it has MORE carbs than full cream.

The Dietician has only got to check the list on the milk bottle and the cream tub to see that. Sounds more like she doesn't want to admit that coz then she would maybe feel obliged to encourage others to use cream instead of milk ;)

I use low carbs for type 1 too. We are not suppose to follow this diet but I have lost nearly 2 stone and my sugar reading are great too. xx

:)

You can follow LC as a T1 if you like.
The recent Public Health Collaboration UK conference had a speaker who was T1 and a low carber AND a doctor. I believe he described low carbing as 'common sense'.

I will see if I can find the link to the talk...
Here you go:

When he diagnosed my diabetes my GP pointed me in the direction of Atkins for weight loss, though our nurse sis and still spouts the "eat carbs with every meal" mantra. Both my GP (now also my main diabetes support) and the previous short term (one consultation only) practice diabetes "expert" have been quite happy both to let me get on with my LCHF way of eating, and with my ability of to manage/control my glucose levels this way. I feel I've been very lucky considering the current general medical consensus that we should be eating what causes many of our diabetic issues.

Low carb diets have been a pretty long term way of controlling diabetes (since at least the late 18th century) and was really the only way of managing it for type 1 diabetics in pre-insulin days. it's only been recently that this way of eating has fallen out of favour, but I believe that it's now being recognised again for the benefits it has for us

PS: @ExD - we have a number of fairly longish term successful low carbing type 1s and several more recent ones on the forum too.

We have been brainwashed for so long that it took me a while to get my head around "eat fat to lose fat". But with the amount of low fat products available in the market, why are there so many obese people?

Great to hear your success....
Unsure as to where you have been advised not to Follow LCHF (I assume the diabetes "Educators")

For others wondering about T1 /LCHF , see 1 example of how a T1 Doctor is managing his

I got my Low Carb info on this Forum Prior to this I was on 3 Gliclazide 2 Metformin 1 statin 1Lisnaprill and doing 8s 9s and 10s daily.
After 6 weeks my numbers were so good my GP agreed I should try giving up all drugs this February. My numbers stay around 6 on low carb alone. I have never felt better and I have lost 3st 6lbs.No one should try this without consulting their GP but stay well clear of Dieticians...

My wife has recently been diagnosed with pre diabetes and advised to follow a low carb high protein diet however no diet plan was offered. Been online and am totally confused. She is working very hard with her swimming but really wants a diet plan to follow so that she can lose weight and avoid type 2, any suggestions please.
