Being unwell & high blood sugars!
I'm a 25 year old type 1 diabetic of 7 years. My DN has never advised me much on low/no carbs and after recently having a baby I'd really like to give it a go, not only to keep my hba1c within range but also to help with maintaining a healthy weight.

I know what carb free means and that the obvious idea is to cut out bread, pasta, potatoes, rice ect ect. But, I'm worried about getting really bored eating the same things repeatedly and then things will go backwards instead of forwards.

Can anyone give me proper examples of what they actually eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks on a daily basis? Please don't just say 'eggs' or 'meat' :)

Hi. Eggs & bacon or home-made muelsi cold not hot and no added suagr but added nuts and seeds. Lunch might be thin slices of Low-GI bread with cheese. Dinner might be fish or meat with a small quantity of potatoes and veg or salad. Perhaps an apple and no-added sugar fruit yogurt.

Thank you Daibell :) do you give yourself an allowance of carbs to have per day? I'm mostly doing this on my own so it will be trial and error with my insulin amounts ect as my DSN is rather unsupportive

Thanks jack412 and DeejayR :) I know there are various low carb diets like Atkins and there's also a slimming world version on the market. It's just not the same as first hand advise from a fellow diabetic who's gone through the same thing so I really appreciate the replies

I'm on a carb budget of around 30g per day. I use myfitnesspal to work out what my macronutrients are. Have a look in the thread that @DeejayR posted for meal ideas. If you go very low carb you will need to start blousing for some of your protein and fat. Happy to help with that if necessary.

Thanks Robert, I'll take all the help I can get :)

As a Type 1, it would be worth trying a reduced carb diet first - around 150g per day to see how you get on. You current insulin:carb ratios would remain the same at that level and you'll see some benefit from reduced insulin and spikes. You can always decide to go lower later if you want to try it.

I don't currently do carb counting Robert, my insulin is just a set dose at meal times hence why I'll be working on a trial and error basis. My DSN is far from a great support so Internet research and this app is my main support function

Any chance you could get on a Dafne course?

I know there was a dafne course 3 months ago but I didn't get a place as I was pregnant so was advised to wait until baby was here. I'll call the clinic tomorrow and enquire about it :)

Do the BDEC carb counting course as it's similar to the DAFNE course that Robert mentioned earlier, but do still ask your DSN to put your name down for the next available DAFNE course as it teaches you much more than you would ever learn from an on-line course.

When you reduce your carbs just be sure to adjust your bolus doses accordingly, as you say it is trial & error to get the dose right but I'm sure you will get there in the end, any questions just come back and ask. Good luck.
