Has anybody ever used milk thistle extract tablets or powder for liver problems? Its said to be good, but also seems to be very expensive..

For decades they were touted as a liver tonic but about two years ago they were re branded as a digestive aid. I think the liver claims were "proved" false. If you want to protect your liver then the amino acids glutamine and n-acetyl cysteine are your best bet. The latter is sulphur. BTW unless you get very drunk they prevent hangovers. My last one was boxing day.:)

No carbs is the place to start; I mean zero, none, nada. You have to get your body to consume its own fat especially that lofged in your pancreas, and the only way to do that is to starve your body of carbs. It took me about 15 days to 'cure' my diabetes, 23 to get my numbers back to non diabetic figures.

That is impossible. Even lettuce contains carbs.

I just got my ultrasound results, and I found that my liver has gone back to normal! I've done a low carb plant based Mediterranean diet getting my fats (moderate intake) from fish like salmon nuts and avocados. Ive cut down on grains and bread and not take any processed food. I've tried the balanced diet before with grains, green juice, yoga and it hasn't worked out, since I've had my diagnosis three years ago even despite being in the normal weight range and exercising. I'm used to seeing "fatty infiltrate" on my abdo ultrasound...now it's normal, Only the low carb diet has done this. And also my blood sugars and hba1c have been on the non diabetic range. Just wanted to share this news so that the ones who have had fatty liver like me would also get this information. :)
That is really great, I am pre diabetic, but trying low carbs which I am finding v hard, how many carbs do you have a day please?

You can get fatty liver without drinking alcohol. An author of a book I read claims he has treated people for cirrhosis who hadn't drank but ate too much sugars. If you are over 50 and overweight it is common to get fatty liver.
Hiya I got fatty liver with no alcohol you can get it if you are fat, slim or regular weight. It is dangerous and can kill you.

Hi Adelle
Many thanks for the post, and congrats on your massive achievement.
My abdominal scan, also three years ago, revealed that I have a fatty liver.
But unlike you, I have not been able to reverse it.
I am on plant based diet, as written by Dr. Esselstyn, but I do eat barley and oats.
Can this small amount cause so much problem?
Someone please help
Sean

Can anyone recommended a good low carb diet, I seem to have lost my way with my diabetes lately and just crave sweet things all the time.

I was diagnosed with non alcoholic fatty liver about 3 yrs ago I was told by the doctor at the hospital that there are so many people who have it and don't know unless they are tested.

1. No "low carb" or "zero sugar" aisles in supermarkets. 2. Sugary "low fat" foods.

Congratulations! I was diagnosed with T2D 4 weeks ago, with signs of a fatty liver. Since then I have been on a low carb diet and have lost 14lbs. When people stop using the term "diabetes" and start using the term "carb and sugar intolerant" they may then realise what the problem is. Anyway, well done!!

That's fine if you are actually "carb and sugar intolerant".
Me, I'm type 2 diabetic, and need to treat it as such, and recognise that is what I am.

Congratulations Adelle.
I was diagnosed with non alcoholic fatty liver disease several years ago. I tried low fat diets which made no difference at all. My readings were way off the scale.. 185 which was over 5 times what it should have been.
2 years of LCHF and I have just been discharged from the liver clinic. My reading is now 35 and according to my specialist, has been that way , consistently normal for a year now :)
Strangely, when she asked what diet I had followed, she was horrified to hear about the high fat aspect.. and said, you can't possibly do that !! Well excuse me, weren't you the one who just discharged me as normal ??
It amazes me that some doctors are not prepared to accept that LCHF actually works !

Some great posts folks - some very inspiring :)

Im intruiged by the fatty liver information - as Ive read up on this & the pancreas being the main issue, once 'clogged' & how liberating it can be to address it, Ive red the Michael Moseley books which were a wealth of information.

However, Im unsure how I'd go about getting a reading, as my GP & nurses have never discussed or really entertained the conversation.

Hi bkr . My test happened a few years ago when I was getting dreadful cramp, all over, arms, legs, side, ribs and back. Doctor was at a loss as what was the problem and sent me for a full blood test. He then took one look at the liver readings and referred me to the hospital.. totally forgetting about the cramp! It probably was related as since I've been on LCHF the cramps have mostly gone.. I still get some in my feet and legs if I'm dehydrated, but it is 90% better.

Thanks Daisyduck :)

Im sorry to hear about your discomfort there, good that they found out the cause. Im intruiged & keen to know what mine is like, as it would help me on my journey a great deal - mainly in building the picture of what my body is doing. I think Ill raise it again with them & explain in a bit more detail why I'd like the scan.

Hello Adelle
I have been diagnosed with T2 and fatty liver a few weeks back. I am very encouraged to hear how you have managed to turn things around. Can you give me a link or some idea of the diet you have been following please? I will be living in Portugal for a few months so this would seem to be a good choice for me to make.

Hi

Adelle started this thread a long while back, and I haven't seen her posting on the forum lately.

You can look in her profile at her other posts, because I remember her mentioning what she ate (lots of salads, if I remember correctly, and possibly LCHF). But there are lots of other posters on the forum who have reduced or 'cured' a fatty liver with weight loss (fast or slow) often combined with low carbs.
