Lucozade Sport etc to aid recovery

Hi

Just a quick query regarding the use of things like Lucozade Sport (or their light options) to aid recovery from runs.

After my diagnosis (type 2), I took up running to improve my fitness and get my weight down.

Now, just over a year after diagnosis, I am not on medication and have been told I have effectively 'reversed' the condition and will now be reviewed on an annual basis.

As I try to keep things high in sugar content to a minimum where possible, I was wondering what the situation with using these to aid recovery from any my longer runs, of approximately 6 miles or so.

Should I be safe enough with this, or is it a no-no?

It all depends on how your body reacts and deals with such a large amount of glucose in one go. Try some and do a finger prick test before and after 1 hour and then 2 hours. If your BG levels go high then leave it out. Otherwise you could find yourself diabetic once again.

If you are looking to hydrate, then water is your friend. Lucozade lite is a pointless drink. It's an expensive way of branding what is essentially flavoured water.

Depending on how much you drink you're doing a glucose tolerance test every time you drink it. Lucazade is effectively pure glucose dissolved in fizzy water. I can't think of a worse thing a diabetic can drink.

I can easily pass a glucose tolerance test so in that regards I've reversed as well yet I still experience large spikes in the first hour and have nothing like a non diabetics response to glucose. If you want to drink the stuff then do a series of tests to make sure you're not missing some enormous spikes.

Hi dm1983 as xyzzy says original Lucozade has 65.4g of carbs per 380ml bottle so you may well find this too much unless you only sip it whilst running and use the carbs as you burn energy but not to drink post run.

The Sports Lite Lucozade only has 10g carbs per 500ml bottle so would be much better for you.

However the best answer would be as luceeloo says and just drink water.

Nutrition information for Lucozade drinks http://www.fatsecret.co.uk/calories-nutrition/search?q=Lucozade+Energy+Drinks
Read each named product carefully as the volumes differ so the carbs are not all based on the same size drink.

After reading endless amounts about this, I'd suggest trying milk, a glass of milk is very popular for recovery, not ideal for me as I hate it and it's quite carby, but a hell of a lot better than lucozade

It is apparently very important to drink it within the first 20 minutes of stopping

Agree with your post entirely.

Wouldn't you say the sports version is pretty pointless too because I thought the whole point of these kind of drinks was to give you a glucose hit so a low carb version wouldn't work.

Like you say the best way to get away with it would be small sips while running but if it's just for hydration water is best.
