Magnesium deficiency

Just come out of hospital after having been taken in by ambulance thinking I was having the start of a heart attack. I had not been feeling well since I started on insulin 3 months ago and then later on metformin and even worse when the dose was increased. I had absolutely no energy, but also could not sleep, was getting leg cramps in the middle of the night, then the last three days I felt nauseous, then I started vomiting and had extreme abdominal pain, then the last night my heart started pounding and having slightly irregular beats. At that point I got a bit scared so called an ambulance.
After an ECG and blood tests they said I had a low magnesium level, which would cause all the above symptoms and it was no doubt brought on from the severe diarrhea I had been having. They said it was not uncommon. If that is the case why is this not monitored as a routine?

Read my posts (and others) on Magnesium below, i.e., "Magnesium Tablets 375gm and leg cramp". Also the posts on leg cramps, again from myself and the help of many others. My last major attack in both legs before going on Magnesium was accompanied with a feeling of sickness, upset stomach and the sweats. You experienced most of the same symptoms. Well I have some reassuring news for you; take the tabs as discussed, and a sachet of Oralit (oral rehydration salts) or similar at night to replace salts lost through the effects of taking larger amounts of Magnesium than normal and you will become nearly new again. I have not experienced another major attack since starting 1250 mg x 2 Malate but am considering either upping the dose to 3 x tabs daily or experimenting with Mag Citrate or Chloride as I am only just keeping the whole leg cramp at bay with the calves hinting that they are considering hurting me ha ha ha.
Keep a small pot of salt by the bed (in an empty test strip phial is ideal because it is airtight) because if you feel the onset of a severe attack a wet finger of salt on the tongue will reduce the effects hopefully within 20 minutes.
