I have been on the maximum Gliclazide for two years and a diabetic for ten. I am 56 and only a year ago was fit enough to be kickboxing sparring and climbing mountains. Six months ago my BS level started veering out of control and I was put on metformin. This made me ill and didnt work. I was then told to stay on the maximum gliclazide for another 3 months before what seemed reluctantly my GP referred me to the hospital diabetic clinic. I then had to wait another month or so and a chase up before receeiving an appointment.

Now I am too tired and weak to climb stairs and my levels range from 13 to 22. I am not overweight and never have been. Noer wa smy brother who went on insulin too late in his opinion and died in diabetic coma.

How high does the BS have to go efore GP's take it seriously. I keep being told my diabetes is not that bad so why do I feel so ill and tied when it goes above 15 adn so goo when it wa sbelow 10?

Any opinions would be appreciated but preferably from those in a similar situation.

thanks

Hi Loretta

It's not for me to diagnose your condition but diabetics are normally asked to keep their HbA1C within a range around 6.5 to 7.5%. This equates roughly to an average blood sugar reading of up to around 9 mmol using a meter and if I've got my sums right! You don't say whether you have had your hospital diabetes department appointment yet? I would press them to discuss options to enable your blood sugar to be sensibly controlled following NHS guidelines. Don't forget the importance of diet and exercise in controlling blood sugar and many of us find the need to control carbohydrate intake by controlling portion size and using low GI forms e.g. I eat low GI bread and not too much! Check what affects you with your meter.

having been on both metformin and gliclazide i know how you feel i am currently on sitaglipton and am doing really well, ask youre doctor for alternatives to the "norm" my count started at 24.6 when i was diagnosed and was about to be hospitalised you have to push and push with youre docs and nurses to get something done the metformin did work but with too many side effects sitaglipton made me have hypos daily! try and get the tel number for youre diabetic clinic and try to get a cancelation its always worth a try! and sorry to here youre brother past away.

13 to 22 with no follow up sounds insane to me. I've been adivsied recently that if you have any problems around control try to swap from GP to a metabolic clinic for treatment.
