Hello,

I often can't face eating in the morning, I have Asda meal replacement shakes (their version of Slimfast). I tested this morning, I was 7.7 two hours after having it. Is that ok, and if so will it be a viable breakfast replacement ongoing?
Are there better ones out there that are more low-carb and have more nutrients?

All advice appreciated.

Unless you test your blood sugars before you drink the shake then you will not know how much it has raised your blood sugar two hours later.

I'll bump your post up as there are forum members who have used a variety of shakes.

I make my own, a lot nicer .but you will have to play to see what effect things have on your BS

These are fine (low carb)

Almond or Soya Milk
Greek Yogurt (full fat)
Peanut Butter (no added anything) organic if poss
A Few berries

Banana is Ok for me in small quantities ie half a banana (I freeze them)
So is a small amount of honey

I also add protein powder when training....

If you dont wish to make you own try here...http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-diet-whey/10530657.html its fairly low carb (I only use a half measure in the above but still only 8g carb when using full measure)) low G.I and is often on offer at 50% off.............. use this and you may get a discount MP120096

Pretty much the cheapest in the UK , I paid £6.50 per KG last week when it was on 50% off...:)

Of course, sorry. It was 6.5 when I got up.

6.5 to 7.7 is fine , just over 1 point :)

Have you though about just skipping brekkie, I do it a lot and if you don't eat til midday (and did not eat after 8 the night before) you are essentially doing 16/8 Intermittent Fasting which has numerous health benefits :)

Thank you, this is useful. I like the idea of the peanut butter.
The protein powder you add to your home made ones, is that the same as the one you linked me to or a different type?

Oh good! I will carry on with them, try making some of my own as mfactor suggests and maybe buy the whey one when it's on 50% off...

I low carb, and most mornings just have coffee with a glug of cream.
It has negligible impact on blood glucose (T2, diet and exercise), and depending on the cream quantity, it can last me 5 hours til lunch.
I consider this much healthier than a processed shake.

I can't have coffee. I can't see that lasting me anyway! :) At least not at the moment. I'm going to try making my own shakes as well, so it's not all bad. Anyone use Agave Nectar here? What's the general opinion?

A different type.... the one I linked too is good on its own but when added to the smoothie it makes it a bit high carb particularly if using a banana ( hence I have half before a workout and half after)

If its just a meal replacement smoothie I have just basic protein (I pick up on offer) just check the carbs and sugar content....this one would do http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein/10530943.html very low carb/sugar 1.3 gram a portion

You dont really need the protein tho, I only use it as I weight train , but the basic smoothie is quite good on its own

Agave nectar is largely fructose - which (unfortunately) has been shown to increase the fat in fatty livers. So it is a really bad idea for T2s.

As @mfactor says, be very careful of fruit in smoothies. Test bg carefully, and factor in ripeness of fruit. A sweet ripe banana has a very different impact from a green unripe banana. The sweeter fruit (bananas, grapes, mango, tropical fruit) tend to impact bg far more than berries, because they contain so much more fructose. Some people can tolerate apples, pears, etc. but you need to find your own personal reactions by testing. The more fibre (pips and peel) the better, because it slows digestion and absorption.

If (as you mentioned elsewhere) you are planning to low carb, you will need to design your smoothie very carefully.

The link in my sig will take you to a green smoothie for T2 website, but even they have some surprisingly high carb recipes.

Smoothies are marketed as being healthy for people on the go. IIRC, Elle McPherson has some superfood powder out, for smoothies. It's the down your smoothie and go for a jog on Malibu beach lifestyle thing that doesn't translate to a wet Sunday in Maidstone. Eating on the go isn't good for the digestion and then, as I'm sure others have said, more easily digested fruit, raises BG.

I used to drink smoothies just as a summer drink, before diabetes. I don't drink them at all now.

Meal replacements.. on the days that I'm not feeling hungry, or when I get home so late after four changes of train and delays that eating seems a bad idea, it would be good to have something light, nutritious and low in carbs. I'm deliberating over an organic meal replacement powder at the moment therefore. I think it would give me more nutrition than an organic stock cube, that probably doesn't have any.

do you have optifast there? Here that's what our endo's recommend but usually it is for weight loss. I have a box in my pantry but to be honest when I read the label of it there is 22g carbs and there are some rather unsavoury ingredients I'd prefer wasn't in there like corn starch, aspartame, maltodextrine (corn), sugar, fructose.... as you can tell there is a weird mix of stuff in them along with a lot of other things. I was contemplating doing weight loss using them again as I'd been advised to do so a couple of times previously by my endo.... but it isn't really what I consider healthy. You're probably better off making your own shake, at least you'll know what is in it.

I think we do have Optifast here or can get it from Amazon, at least.

I don't like additives either, so that's why I'm looking at organic meal replacement powders. Tinned or packet soups here are just too sweet, salty and carby to have as a quick snack.

One thing I have learned, is to look beyond the supermarkets, health food store chains and pharmacies, to find interesting, nutritious organic things so I'm trying them e.g. Paleo, low carb and bodybuilding online stores.

Hi. I wouldn't touch anything with those additives - mainly carbs and high-GI bad ones.

Agave nectar is very expensive sugar and best for us to avoid.

Thanks everyone, I am reading all your replies, not up to commenting much myself at the minute, feeling rough.
