Evening All,

So tomorrow I’m going to start on meal replacement shakes, specifically Huel.

Shakes for breakfast and lunch and then a proper meal for tea.
I need to lose a few pounds, stuck at 14st so I’m hoping this helps

Does anyone else to the meal replacements?
Do you find it helps?

Yes I have used huel for many years. However it is not a miracle cure for weight loss. I have 2 meals a day using 2 thirds black and 1 third white powder.

I have no experience as I have a principle about not using heavily processed foods, which in my view these shakes are.

If you're testing BG around them and the figures are working for you, that's the most important thing.

I have 2 huel shakes a day mainly because I follow a vegan diet. Huel is a complete meal so suits me but that might not be the case for anyone else. Most of today's food could be classed as highly processed. Everyone is free to make their own decisions on that topic.

Meal replacement shakes helped me lose 49kg way back in 2011. Also took blood glucose levels to non-diabetes level.
Regained some of the weight when returned to normal eating. So *40kg lighter than when I started, though still heavier than is deemed healthy. Use Low carb since 2015, but still can’t cope with high fat. BG levels remain stable, and out of diabetes range.

Of course meal replacement shakes are highly processed, but I regarded them as a short term ‘medicine’, to treat the ‘illness’ that had plagued me for many years. It was a short term course, and gave the nutrients needed whilst I was restricting calories.

I would not advocate using the method without the support of HCPs as meds could need to be adjusted, or stopped altogether.

I was speaking to a lady I haven’t seen for a couple of years and she was a size 20, now a size 12 and she’s off all her T2 meds with the 2 shakes & one calorie controlled meal a day. She now has the same amount of calories + 200 more but with all food & she has maintained for 6 months.

Different things work for different people

Thanks for the response guys.
While it is only 2 days in, my BG high has been 10.2, lowest 6.1.

Since I starting reading my bloods I’ve been reading all over the shop, so I see this as a positive.

Only issue is…… I could eat a scabby horse lol

What is the carb content of the shakes, and your total carb content each day, @Minsh1 ?
I used shakes that had 12.5 gr carb and a total daily carb of 50gr. That put me into ketosis (fat burning mode) . Ketosis state also meant I didn’t feel hunger after first day.

@Minsh1
It would be a good idea to mention to GP what you are doing, as you could need to have those meds adjusted. The Gliclazide, in particular, could cause blood glucose levels to fall to hypo level with too much restriction on carbs.
Also, you need to keep a check on blood pressure as you are on meds for that.

I’ll reach out to the gp. See what they have to say.

Depending on where you live, some areas offer meal replacement diets on NHS. Which in addition to the meal replacement products offer regular health checks and support for the duration.
