Hi all,

I've been Type 1 for about 30 years. I'm looking at moving my whole care 'package' to a nearby hospital rather than get my support from the local GP service as I've heard good things about the Hospitals care of Diabetes and I dont have great confidence in my local GP care.
Is there any issue with doing this? Can I do this? Can somebody select where they receive treatment/care and how do you go about it?

Thanks Ya'll

Joe

Hi grandutero as far as I'm aware you can opt just to go to your hospital for care I was under my hospital for many years before I decided to go to my surgery as it was easier (closer) to where I live hos long way to travel not sure now what process you have to go through to get referred probably have to ask doctor but can't see why you shouldn't get referred hope this helps good luck and all the best.

Hi All,
Sorry for the slow response. I answer to do I see a consultant, the answer is no. I see a diabetic nurse at my GP. I usually have relatively good HBA1c - 6ish. recently I got a 7.2 so the nurse asked me to get another test soon and if its still going wrong way he can refer me to a local team. All sounds fine but I like idea of going to the hospital where theres a bigger team in one place. I got an appointment tomorrow as the GP so I'll ask and report back.
I just feel that seeing a diabetic nurse every 6 months isn't cutting it at the moment and I'd like to have access to dieticians etc.

Thanks ya'll.

Most Type 1s are seen by a hospital, team @grandutero I only see my team once a year but I really appreciate their expertise and my consultant is excellent.

If you can't refer yourself, perhaps you can ask your GP for a referral.

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
Some GPs now do not refer T1's to hospital. They dont in our CCG unless the person has problems....
I had to fight to see a consultant when we moved 18months ago. Even the local hospital I was sent to couldnt help and I got referred then by my Gp (thankfully) to tertiary care diabetes specialist.

Some GPs are not easy to get a referral.. fortunately for me at my new GP when they actually saw my notes that they then realised my request was warranted.

You could always ring enquiries at your CCG and ask what their policy is for GPs to refer to consultants..that would be my advice first...
