Hi,

I was diagnosed with type 1 in December and have a "full medical exam" with a consultant (or something) next week. I was just wondering what exactly this involves - I've never had a medical before - and whether any of you have any experiences you can share about yours (if you had one).

Thanks

Hi @J1998L ,

Try not to worry, this usually invloves measuring your height, weight and blood pressure and having a nice chat with the friendly endocrinologist - nothing too taxing. :)

If you have any complications - they might refer you somewhere else - like a podiatrist or opthalmic specialist. Somebody will probably arrange for you to get retinopathy eye screening, and dietary advice as well.

Thanks! I've already had an eye screening and talks to someone about my diet so this shouldn't be too difficult.

Going forward, you might start to think that these appointments are a waste of time, especially if you're otherwise healthy. Mine are 6 monthly and I always go because at my local hospital they refer you back to your GP if you miss an appointment. I figured that it's better to have them on-side if things go belly up - and it's an excuse to get the afternoon off work;).

Hi. That's good but I hope the diet advice used up to date thinking and not the outdated 'have loads of carbs advice' otherwise you may gain weight.

They didn't tell me to have loads of carbs, no. However, I am still to put back on the weight I lost before diagnosis so I do need to gain some weight.
