I’m quite newly diagnosed - a couple of months ago - and also pregnant. I was wondering if anyone has accessed diabetes-specific mental health support, or been signed off work for a while after diagnosis. I was coping for the first month or so, but then various other life things came up too and it just feels a bit like I’ve blown a fuse. I’m a bit numb and panicky and just can’t stop crying. I can’t manage to get any work done and wondering if I should get a sick note. I’ve never had one before and don’t know who to talk to - can the DSNs help? I don’t know if I really want to talk to my GP.

Hi,
I unfortunately, had a breakdown a couple of years back. And after my fami!y urged me,told me, and this was during lockdown, I spoke of my issues with her and resulted in two years of counselling. You have taken a first step by posting on here. Now the next step is your GP or a helpline to one of the many charitable mental counsellors.
Don't sit in silence, let those people help you, and take it easy on yourself.
Speak to someone who won't judge you and of course confidential.

That is the next best step

I was with Mind for my last lot of counselling and I would recommend them, and the tea is brilliant!

Take care, best wishes.

Hello @Veggietimes I was diagnosed with gestational at 23 weeks and put straight onto insulin, it was a great shock but also explained my insatiable need to eat which i'd put down to being pregnant, I was always hungry and knackered. Yes you need support, it's vital to speak to your DSN, they can advise what support is available in your area. I was hoping for a water birth but any plans or ideas went out the window due to the diabetes, it wasn't quite what I hoping for and I was induced early at 37 weeks too. The diabetes went once i'd given birth but came back a couple of years later as full blown t1 and that too was a shock, but I struggled more at this point than when I was pregnant, I think because I thought that was just gestational and that was that. Lean on your team but also talk to others here, get support where you can find it, happy to chat on pm too x
