Being type one and not resistant to insulin in any significant way I was surprised to hear my consultant offer me Metformin as a means of reducing the risk of micro vascular complications, on account of my maculopathy.

Has anyone else heard this or been put on Metformin with this in mind....?

How would it reduce the risk?

Told him to shelf the idea for now but will consider anything to avoid laser/injections......:nailbiting:

Watching this thread as I'm interested in the merits of Metformin with T1D. It seems like a fair few clinics offer this drug to their T1 patients.

Hope you get an answer soon @novorapidboi26:)

For the last few months, I've been taking high doses of vitamin C powder (L-ascorbic acid) as it has various properties.

antioxidant
antiviral
antitoxin
antimicrobial

I take 5gm morning and evening.
In a talk on YouTube (link below) Thomas Levy, a proponent of megavitamin therapy, points out that diabetes is inversely associated with vitamin C levels, which would suggest we could all benefit from it. He relates various conditions to localised scurvy e.g. atherosclerosis = arterial scurvy, osteoporosis = bone scurvy, heart attack = heart scurvy.

It appears that vitamin C improves the elasticity of capillaries, and therefore lessens their fragility. It appears to target sorbitol (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7963139)

I thought metformin was prescribed to reduce insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in people with a BMI over 27, regardless of type of diabetes. I was never on it though, as my GP at diagnosis thought I wouldn't benefit from it as I hadn't any particular signs of insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome nor did I fit the BMI figure.

It is often prescribed to reduce insulin resistance in women with PCOS.

I have never heard of metformin as a help for micro vascular problems but then I'm not a doctor.
