Hi, you may remember I posted a few months ago about being newly diagnosed and running the marathon. They prescribed gliclazide which after listening to a few of you I didn’t take but changed my diet completely. My HbaC1 in April was 84. I saw the consultant on the 19th June and it had come down to 50. My morning finger prick tests are still high 7-9 but it stays normal throughout the day. I’ve slowly introduced some carbs, rice, sourdough bread occasionally and it seems to remain below 10 at peak. The consultant wants me to take metformin twice a day but I’m really not sure whether to or stick with the new diet and see how it goes. They’ve tested for LADA but I haven’t had the results back yet. My triglycerides were slightly higher too and he’s said take statins but again I’m not certain. Any advice please? Thanks

Hi @Rossi5 I take Plant Sterols in place of statins and the doctor is fine with that, but obviously they're not on prescription. It's a more natural way than statinls, which to many of us bring additional problems with our health. I do take one Metformin per day (originally 3 per day) and am one of the rare ones who never had the slightest problem with them, and even though I've maintained an A1c of 37/38 for two years now I still take it as my GP says it helps protect my heart. Mainly it's diet that is top priority I've found, plus not eating throughout the day with snacks etc that we don't really need. I hope you do well

Thanks @coby. Worth exploring the plant sterols for sure
@Rossi5 It was actually my GP who suggested them to me when I flatly refused the sterols she tried to push onto me. I'd never heard of them until then, and she even wrote them down on a slip of paper for me. I buy mine online from Healthspan and they are 800mg per tablet. I take three per day ... just in case this helps :)

Just a question: after doing so well and reducing your A1c, what is your reason for reintroducing carbs? You say your BG remains "normal through the day" - below 10 is not a range I'd be comfortable with describing as normal.

You mentioned the consultant wants you to take two metformin twice a day, did you take any when reducing from 84-50?
