Hi I’m on Metformin slow release tablets, 2 x 500mg a day and I’m wondering what people find is the best way to take them? I’ve tried twice a day but often forget the tea time one so am now taking them both in the morning but am not convinced they are keeping the control over the day. I’ve just had an oatcake and cheese and my bs is up at 7.6 which is disappointing. I’ve been on other meds which I’ve managed to come off and really don’t want to take them again!
Thanks, Alison

Hi Ali mark and welcome to the forum.
Metformin is a mild drug in that it doesn’t do much to directly change the effect of food on your levels, it instead works in the background to stop your liver chucking out too much sugar. I take Metformin twice a day, morning time I remember as I have other meds to take, but the evening one I just have a repeating alarm on my phone so I don’t miss It.
I think oatcakes may be too high carb for you, but it’s difficult to say without a reading before you ate to compare. You’re looking to have a reading of no more than 2mmol/l higher post meal but no higher than 7.8mmol/l in any case.

Edit for typo

Hi. Metformin SR can be taken at almost any time as it's not critical. It does work in the background and you won't see it's effect on any particular meal.

I am on so many tablets that I rattle. I got one of those tablet boxes, has to be big to cope with all my tablets, and I set my alarm.

When I was taking Metformin XR, I took them at breakfast and dinnertime as directed by my GP.
